Eating in Edinburgh

  • www.list.co.uk is a great place to source places to eat in Edinburgh and Glasgow. They'll let you do searches on, budget meals, child friendly, BYOB, late dining, highly recommended (hitlisted) places and so on.

If you want to check out deals give https://www.5pm .co.uk a try as well as that's where a lot of restaurants will offer special deals.

    Hope that helps

Hiyas, all. Just want to let you know we had a fab time for dinner at Le Marche Francais. The service was great, the place slightly quirky, the food super and the house wine a real bargain! The cuisine is southern French - Mediterranean style (olive oil & wine & spices, as opposed to butter & cream....) I've not eaten so much or so well in ages. Creme broulee was beautiful, with a touch of Grand Marnier and fresh orange zest... yum!! The manager/head waiter is charming and welcoming; the young waiter is adorably shy....you'll want to take him home in your pocket. ;)

For Italian food you can't be La Rusticana in Cockburn Street, its been a while since I was in Edinburgh but last time I was there we went there. If you don't see your favorite on the menu speak to your waiter...they whipped up a great eggplant parmesian for my fiance and the canneloni was gorgeous.

The shop front is small and unassuming but once you get inside its a whole other thing, decoarted with scenes of Italy with authentic music playing, actualy Italian staff (In Bella Pasta in Edinburgh our waiter spoke with an accent when speaking to us but he was outside having a smoke when we left and he was a broad scotsman with as broad an accent).

There is also a great little sushi place that I could take you to but couldn't give you an address lol, it was so small and about a 20 minute walk from Princess Street, it was a really little place selling authentic sushi and my fiance said the hot sake was the best he had had (not my thing). Things in Edinburgh change so quickly alot of web sites are going to be out of date, we asked a man who worked in a shop to reccommend a good place to us and thats how we found La Rusticana. To know where to go, where the locals are happy to go and eat...ask a local, they are all happy to help and will give you better advice than most web sites.

For Italian try Bella Mbriana down the bottom of Broughton Street, have yet to find a good Mexican restaurant in Edinburgh - Tijuana Yacht Club on Hanover Street is now The Dogs (which is excellent and great value by the way, but not Mexican) and friends who went to the Mexican (Pancho Villas??) on Canongate/Royal Mile said it was awful, best Chinese is Chop Chop near Haymarket station, not had Indian for a while but there are some great restaurant recommendations here, including a couple of Indian places: http://www.couchsurfing.com/group_read.html?gid=1251&post=982900

A friend recommends Kismot: http://edinburghmenus.com/directory/kismot_eh89qn/ - that site (Edinburgh Menus) is useful for reviews too: edinburghmenus.com

Saigon Saigon - just off Princes St - the street that's almost opposite Waverley Bridge - absolutely amazing Chinese. Prob about 75% of the customers were Chinese, which says a lot
