If you're at the Festival/fringe, it's a perfect location too.

"Room in the Town" in Howe Street in the New Town area of Edinburgh.
Consistently good food, pleasant service and reasonably priced0 -
I recommend The Forest (cafe) on Bistro place, crazy vegetarian cafe where the food is fresh and cheap £3-4 for huge main meals. All entertainment is free whether a band is playing, a film showing, a poem recital etc. it even has a cool little art gallery. it's crazy ramshackle, unique and fantastic. It's run by friendly people (whom are all volunteers!!)and lots of banter to be had. Go enjoy a cup of coffee and read a book on one of their random couches. Always, always something new and exciting going on.
***** + an extra * for somewhere having the guts to do something truly unique.Skint :money:0 -
Can recommend Mezbaan (South Indian restaurant) in Tollcross. I have tried it a couple of times since reading a review in the Independent and can recommend the vegetarian South Indian specialities in particular - Masala Dosa and Idli. The lamb curries are good too (have tried Gosht Khaas Bemisal Chaman and Andhra lamb). Eat in with BYOB (£2 corkage) or takeaway (you can even order online).

Bonsai (Japanese) on West Nicolson street is also good and inexpensive.

Empires Turkish cafe is a reallyt lovely place. It has recently been taken over by a new owner and this guys is much better than the last owners. the food is lovely Tapas style or full main meal. Rich flavours and very tasty.
The atmosphere is very relaxed and cosy. There is a nice little area up the stairs for small parties, and a little stage on the ground floor where they have some great worl music style musicians. last time I went there, a freind of mine was playign and everyone in the restaurant was singing a long and we were passed around little drums to join in and it was a really good night. highly recommended.Skint :money:0 -
This site has an offer for 15% off at Mezbaan (but only between 5 and 7pm and excluding Friday and Saturday) when you book online:

They have offers for quite a few other Edinburgh restaurants too."The happiest of people don't necessarily have the

A resturant I would recommend is Gusto on George Street. I went there for my 21st birthday and it was fantastic. I've been there a few times before, it has a fantastic atmophere, the place is very fancy but the prices are great!
We had a party of 10 people and each person paid around £10 each for a meal and a non alcoholic drink!
It used to be called Est Est Est but was refurbished last year or something! I think it is my new favourite resturant!!
