Like I've said in my posts, it all depends who you ask, Brand Fanboyism are some of the worst types.
Not sure I like the tone this thread is going down as there seems to be a lot of Mud thrown back and forth.

I'll just reiterate a few points. If your son is autistic than Apple machines are brilliant, both iPads and the Operating System, I've worked with Autistic kids (and grown ups too) who find the usability of Macs to be brilliant to use, I don't normally deal with special needs people but sometimes I do come in contact with them and I also chat with their parents/carers who say that the kids love their macs & iPads and they get so engrossed in using Garageband to create some music their faces light up because it's something they've done on their own and its their way of expressing themselves.

Yes Macs are very easy to use, there is no doubting that, but to say thats a negative is a massive flaw. If you'r son loves programming it doesn't matter what system he's using, so long as he has a editor and a compiler he's fine (and he'll take all of 2 minutes to do that)

Decades of utility marketing and poorly researched journalism has perpetuated these slowdown myths and cures, reinstalling windows or getting rid of the crap is the only cure that works. You don't need a boot cd to delete an index.dat file, but doing it in the hope of speeding up a pc would be futile.

Utility marketing has no relevance to me as I have stated I like to do things manually. As I have also stated the only way to properly get a system back up to speed is to reinstall windows, I am glad you agree.

Surely though you are now backtracking as you said Windows doesn't need cleaning up just the crap does. (some would argue they are the same thing;))

So what you are saying is windows doesnt get messed up, but you need to reinstall it now and again.

What do you think happens when you reinstall Windows?
Could it be things like temp files are deleted?
    Possibly a non fragmented HDD?
    Clean registry?

Oh hang on, non of these things speed a system up!!!

I think you are confused, and you have certainly lost me.
It said on the box requires Windows 7 or better, so I bought a MAC

We are taking the thread off topic. I'm not confused, reinstalling windows gets rid of the crap software, resource hungry software, or malware installed since purchase, which is why it can speed things up, nothing to do with fragmentation, temp files, or a few extra entries in the registry.

Fragmented hard drive = slow down FACT
Temp files everywhere = slow down FACT
Missing or broken registry entries = slow down FACT

These things happen with anything you put on or take off, not just crap.
Are you saying you need to have an OS and nothing else to have a quick PC?

And as I stated in my post the very way Linux works avoids the slow down effects of loading crap onto it.

Qualify those facts with some well researched data. What you'll discover is neither of those 'facts' are relevant in modern Windows, nor can they be accurately measured and a conclusion drawn. The modern PC has far more resources than is heeded to function, therefore minute impairments are mitigated, which 10-15 years ago would have cadet significant issues.

I don't think the amount of programs that people have installed in their system tray for all sorts of unnecessary functions is an unfair culprit for slow running computers. They don't grind to a halt over time, they're not made of cogs.

I'd definitely go over to an Apple store before dropping a grand on a computer for a 12 year old. In fact, I wouldn't drop a grand on a computer for a 12 year old, but then again, different horses for courses and all.

Apple are definitely the buzz-firm of the moment, albeit they do seem to make good computers, but make sure it isn't just "hype" talking - it's a lot of money..

Would you drop a grand on a 12 year old Autistic kid who wants a mac in order to express himself through programming and the ease of use it provides?

No. I'd drop the money to get a refurbished iMac or Mac Mini if it's Apple-specific he's after, assuming I could see a justifiable benefit to him having the computer. No need to go brand new, the warranties on refurbished apple stuff is good I understand.

In any event, mac, linux, unix, basic or windows - I'd want to explore the justification for a computer of that value on what is still a young child, autistic or not.

    KillJoy.

Besides OP's already said she's thinking of using it as the main home system now so its not like its money spent exclusively for him.

And yes you can get refurbs, but the price differences is neligable between a new system and a pre-owned system.

Er.... mac ease of use for programming?

That is not right at all!

    Making music, art, entertaining, yes.

    Programming? No way.
