Glad to hear it but windows isn't as bad as you're making out now is it.;)

As I said 7 is Ok XP wasn't too bad, but VISTA.
In my opinion it doesn't work as well, and is not designed as well as Linux, Unix or OSx

Currently on Linux Mint, prefer it to windows actually which I prefer to apple.

Could you be tempted to try Macbuntu?;)
I like Linux. Sabayon and Fedora are my favourites, but I prefer the Mac. It is not just about the software, it is the whole package including the hardware. My display is a higher resolution than 1080p HD TV, my magic mouse is just gorgeous as is my keyboard and I love my whole Mac package.

The excitement of getting it home and opening the box is like being a kid again on christmas morning. You dont get that with any other PC

Anyway, my point is that PCs don't inherently slow down, they aren't magnets for malware,

Pc's do slow down. Windows uses a registry which linux and Unix do not. If the registry gets messed up or programs leave entries lying around after being uninstalled this slows the system down.
Temporary files are stored all over the place in windows, and dont always get cleaned up.Try searching for some after using a clean up program, one way type %temp% into the run box, and see how many you come across.

The way windows writes to disk means it needs defragging prevent it slowing down. The first and foremost reason you do not have to defrag a Linux or unix system is that the majority of files on a system need super-user permission to move. Oh sure you can move anything you want around in your ~/ directory. But try to move anything in /usr/bin, /opt, /sbin or any other directory outside of ~/ (without super user permission) and see how far you get. What this means is that during general, every-day usage the vast majority of files are not being moved around on your system. The only files you really need concern yourself with are the ones in your home directory – and those files have little to nothing to do with the performance of your machine.

Another difference is that some other operating systems try their best to place files as close the front of the drive as they can – without gaps. When files get moved around, these gaps appear, making it hard for the drive to be read. The Linux operating system does not do this. Instead the system starts in the center and places files not in a random fashion, but doesn’t concern itself with placing files next to one another in the start of the drive. So when spaces are created it’s not a big deal because the system is used to those spaces. The only time you will notice defragmentation on a Linux drive is when the drive is over 95% full. At that point the seeming “randomness” of placement will have caught up and the spaces between files might not allow for the addition of more files.

Add to this the fact you need to have anti virus running on windows and you can soon see the very nature of a Windows PC means it can quickly get clogged up and slow down.

In other words to keep it running nice and quick requires a lot of maintenance or for the ultimate speed freak a fresh Windows install every 6 months should do the trick

My take on Macs vs PCs as a whole:

Its the Ford Mondeo MK3 V6 vs 2002 Jaguar X-Type 2.5L * argument. Both share mostly similar hardware, both do the same job of getting you from A to B but one costs a fair bit more than the other, has some very nice touches, is built from slightly better materials and transports you in more style and comfort.

There is nothing wrong with the Ford Mondeo and it does the job of shifting things around as well as the Jag but the Jag is just a higher class of car.

*Jag X-Type 2.5L was based on the Ford Mondeo V6 running gear

registry, temp files, and fragmentation have nothing to do with why windows can slow down, it's slows down if you load crap onto it, and so would linux.

Fair enough but I disagree. Each has its plus points. Linux for me is the best. I like my scruffy clothes, my cheap old banger of a car, and I like carrying around a laptop that is nearly 4 years old and looks like its been dropped down some stairs, which according to mac fanboys shouldn't exist. It runs perfectly though the battery doesn't last as long (2hrs 45 instead of 3hrs 30) and the keyboard is dented, not to mention the massive scratch on the lid courtesy of my daughter (right though the acer badge as well!)

Its a love affair we have with our Macs.
I am a motorcyclist and you always have a special bond with your bike, a car is just transport, but bikers love their bikes. It is the same with owning a Mac

but it seems Macbuntu does it better than apple judging by the screen shots: http://sourceforge.net/projects/macbuntu/

Not quite, although it is very authentic. I used Macbuntu for quite a while before the Mac arrived, there is something that just isnt right about looking at an apple like screenshot on a pc

All opinions though and thats why these debates never end.

exactly right. The world would certainly be dull if we all liked the same things and didnt have different opinions.

I would be interested though to find out how many "Apple haters" spend hours in the apple shops at weekends playing with all the Macs iPads and iPhones.
My kids have to wait for ages for a go on angry birds on iPad on Saturdays;)

Fragmented hard drive = slow down FACT
Temp files everywhere = slow down FACT
Missing or broken registry entries = slow down FACT

These things happen with anything you put on or take off, not just crap.
Are you saying you need to have an OS and nothing else to have a quick PC?

And as I stated in my post the very way Linux works avoids the slow down effects of loading crap onto it.

defrag, run ccleaner on temp files and registry on any slow pc you can find, you won't notice the slightest difference in speed afterwards. FACT.

I have to disagree the car analogy doesn't work but this one does:

I agree mate, the Triumph is like a PC, a poor relation to a sexy Italian bike or a dependable Jap bike. Never innovate only copy.

Dont Triumphs always have a puddle of oil underneath them?;)

Ccleaner doesnt clean everything up fully, and can make the registry worse. Instead of using the easy option of ready made tools, delve into the registry yourself and have a dabble if you feel confident enough. A few registry tweaks here and there can make a difference, go find all those temp files manually and get rid of them, use a linux live cd to get rid of those index.dat files that cant be removed with the OS running although CCleaner will have a go. I have fixed enough PC's in my time and have plenty of tips from long serving IT pros.

Try reinstalling your OS, then load your programs back on then see how much quicker it is

Decades of utility marketing and poorly researched journalism has perpetuated these slowdown myths and cures, reinstalling windows or getting rid of the crap is the only cure that works. You don't need a boot cd to delete an index.dat file, but doing it in the hope of speeding up a pc would be futile, they are tiny, and inconsequential.
