Used too run a business
did it go bust due to your poor management of handling cash flow?
If you used the energy then you should pay if you dont then you may have poor credit rating and or per pay meter and as others said the utility company may not allow you to switch with a debtPhantom_Avenger wrote: »Used to run a business, I'm a copywriter. Keep your opinions to yourself.0 -

The OP felt able to advise on 'basic bookeeping' in another thread, see:Simplest one for UK I reckon is Simplex D. The lass who wrote it sells it on floppy on Ebay, I got it for about a fiver. You can get the books for it an' all but the software generates purchase ledgers and whatnot to make it simple as ya go along

I don't understand this at all...
Does the current £500 debt including some debt that your late mother had accumulated, or is it all since her death? None of that debt is your responsibility, it's payable by her estate and not by you.
You should have closed the account after she passed away, requested a final bill and passed that to the solicitor to deal with. Then open a new account in your name. By waiting over 2 years you've very much complicated the situation. The solicitor winding up the estate would have dealt with the old account, not opened a new one in your name-that is not one of their duties.
It appears that you haven't paid anything but £30 since you became responsible for the supply in 9/08. If so, a bill of £500 is something of a bargain. No free lunch, and no free laptop

This thread is probably the most useful, much more than the one at debtwizard http://www.debtwizard.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=322 that you also posted on which basically tells you to follow the complaints procedure.
You can follow the complaints procedure, and they'll tell you that you owe them for the energy you've used, they have done nothing wrong as far as I can tell. The thread here is more realistic, the complaints procedure will not write off the debt.0
