Vauxhall lifetime guarantee scam

Was looking at a new vauxhall with a family member the other day. At the dealer was big signs every where advertising "lifetime guarantee" for every new car.

So i ask the sales rep, so if the car is 7 years old it still is covered?
He said NO. Only for 5 years or 100,000 miles.
So technically not a lifetime guarantee:mad:

Hmmmm, not sure how these big garages get away with it.

"We’re so confident in Vauxhall quality and reliability that we are now offering a warranty that could last a Lifetime! Available to the first owner of all new Vauxhall passenger cars, it’s valid for the lifetime of the vehicle up to a maximum of 100,000 miles."

All new Vauxhall passenger cars are covered by a one-year unlimited mileage manufacturer’s warranty with qualifying repairs at no cost to you.

Years 2 & 3
The manufacturer’s warranty is extended for two more years up to a maximum of 60,000 miles.

After that, Vauxhall provides a unique Lifetime Warranty, available to the first owner for an unlimited time period and a maximum of 100.000 miles."

People who buy new cars don't generally tend to keep them more than a few years....... So it really doesn't matter either way.

Besides, manufacturers don't care if a car falls apart inside it's warranty! In fact they make a tidy sum out of warranty work because they buy a part for say £20 from the supplier, it fails, they claim back from the supplier the full retail cost (maybe £150) + labour charges.

Here's where it gets interesting!

ALL parts are under supplier warranty to the manufacturer, but the manufacturer doesn't extend that warranty to all parts on the vehicle for the customer.... If a non-warranty part fails, the customer is charged for the part + fitting, then the manufacturer charges that same cost to the parts supplier.

Either way, the automotive industry is constantly shafting it's suppliers.

I'd rather buy 2nd hand 3 or 4 years old minimum, all the teething faults have been fixed and the depreciation is minimal

I agree with you, I don't see how they get away with the poor training either. Because it is not the dealer's decision how a warranty is structured, that is down to the warranty provider, in this case the manufacturer.

From what I understand the Vauxhall warranty lasts for the as long as the car is registered with the DVLA and continued to be to be registered to the original owner. Perhaps you didn't ask the right question; the warranty is not available to subsequent owners.

So if you are only buying the Vauxhall to use and will upgrade in 2-3 years the so called lifetime warranty is bog all use to anyone. However if you intend keeping it for life (yours, the cars subject to the very small print) it could be beneficial if only to annoy General Motors.

no i was told warranty is for 5 years or 100,000 miles whichever comes first only. Although the big signs at the dealer show rooms advertised it as "lifetime warranty". Lifetime to me implies the full useable life of the car on the road. So if a car last more than 5 years it should be covered but its not.

1.1. Duration of the warranty, dependence on first owner

Vauxhall undertakes that each new motor vehicle supplied thereon by Vauxhall as original equipment will be free from defect in material or workmanship according to the state of the art under normal use and service for an unlimited time period and a maximum of 100,000 miles. The warranty is valid for the first registered owner of the vehicle who bought the vehicle at a Vauxhall Authorised Retailer.

The warranty starts with the date of delivery by the Vauxhall Retailer or date of first registration, whatever comes first.

Sounds quite unambiguous to me. No mention of a five year limit.

hmmm glad you checked that out. But five years was what i have been quoted at two Vauxhall dealers. Also it has to be serviced by either Vauxhall or one of their nominated garages to ensure its kept valid.

Again, you are labouring under another misnomer, the vehicle only has to be "inspected" at the franchised dealer, or an authorised repairer. It can be serviced at any VAT registered repairer.

lucky my relative decided at the time not to go for a Vauxhall!
