This is what I was thinking; you can't be sure that the tuna hasn't dehydrated in some way- that the liquid you drain is all brine. Some of it may have been the natural moisture content of the tuna. Also a tiny amount of the mass of the tuna may disolve into the water. When I drained the brine from my tuna today it was not clear but showed traces of tuna. Had I weighed my tuna it would have inevitable weighed less than it did when it was tinned.
This will obviously have some effect but I don't think 56g of brine could draw out even close to 40g of natural moisture from 129g tuna. It's highly implausible.0 -

I wouldn't worry about the Tuna content in Tesco Value tins I would be more worried what the percentage of rat was.

There was a thing on TV actually a few months back about the packaging in supermarkets seem to be the same, but the produce itself is less than it was, yet we were still paying the same, if not, more.
I do kind of understand what the OP means, but I don't know if I'd personally complain to them, however, I'm curious to read the response, have you got it yet? lol
Erm....I did complain to a comapny because I bought one of those tubs of instant hot drink and the tub was half full. They gave us 2 new ones and discount vouchers and an explanation, which made sense - basically, during transit, as the produce moves around, it fills up any 'air pockets' - jeese - I know what I mean lol, I can't give you word for word, but it made sense at the time lol.
Does ANYTHING I'm saying make sense? lol:beer: Thank you to everyone!

The issue here may well lay with the way that the Tuna is being drained.
There is a European best practice guide on verifying drained weight using test sieves of a specific size and draining for a specific time etc. If you have a lot of time on your hands or if like me you are afflicted with an interest in this subject its worth a read.
It is Welmec 6.8, can't post a link but google it if you're interested.
It may well be that you are removing more brine than would drain away using the above test method. Particularly if there is any squeezing of the tuna with the lid.0 -

I know what you mean pet.. As the package moves in transport the air thats in between the powder moves to the top and thus the powder settles to the bottom giving the impression of not a lot being in there.
But good for them for sorting you out some stuff and an explanationone of the famous 50 -
What a load of patronising rubbish.
I'm not arguing about the variation from one tin to another, the issue is the shortfall between what they're selling and what's marked on the label. Brine is brine and tuna is tuna. If Tesco say there's 129g of tuna in the tin and 56g of brine, you can't very well count brine as tuna. It's simplicity itself to strain off the brine with the lid of the can, if I were throwing 40g of tuna away along with the brine I think it would be more than a little obvious, if I were leaving brine in the tuna the weight would be high not low. We're talking about between a quarter and a third of the tin here, not a few flakes.
how about this for patronising rubbish.
MOISTURE MIGRATION.
Have you opened a tin fo salmon? its just salmon and salt? but you get lots of liquid in there? that is salmon juice and not just water and brine.
Same happens with tuna. The brine solution draws water out from the tuna.0 -
