    Your study falls over on that count.

    I'm assuming the content quoted is the weight prior to the addition of brine, and your post-purchase removal also removes an element of the tuna, hence the lower weight described.

    The variation is likely your variable menthod of brine removal.

    I'm not arguing about the variation from one tin to another, the issue is the shortfall between what they're selling and what's marked on the label. Brine is brine and tuna is tuna. If Tesco say there's 129g of tuna in the tin and 56g of brine, you can't very well count brine as tuna. It's simplicity itself to strain off the brine with the lid of the can, if I were throwing 40g of tuna away along with the brine I think it would be more than a little obvious, if I were leaving brine in the tuna the weight would be high not low. We're talking about between a quarter and a third of the tin here, not a few flakes.

    People would complain if Tesco undersold you Petrol as that would be very expensive and have much more of an impact on your finances than this.

    What I am more confused about is how you found this out? At what point did you decide to drain the brine from a small can of tuna and then weigh it? Do you weigh all your foods? How much does a small can of Tesco Value tuna cost? 80p?

    Problem with your method there is that you will inevitably lose some tuna through this method.

    This is what I was thinking; you can't be sure that the tuna hasn't dehydrated in some way- that the liquid you drain is all brine. Some of it may have been the natural moisture content of the tuna. Also a tiny amount of the mass of the tuna may disolve into the water. When I drained the brine from my tuna today it was not clear but showed traces of tuna. Had I weighed my tuna it would have inevitable weighed less than it did when it was tinned.

    I think the fact it's 5 pints per gallon, rather than 5 litres for every 8 sold speaks volumes about the OPs attitude.
