    It's easy to get OSF running 2.3.3
  • You should consider the Samsung Galaxy Apollo i5800. It's currently reduced to £80 + £10 top-up at CPW. The build quality, processor (speed), camera and battery life are much better than the Orange San Francisco. The touch screen is also very very responsive.

    I am assuming I'm running 2.1 as I've never updated the ROM.. what are the benefits of updating it?

    More features & better performance basically.

    You will indeed be running 2.1-update1 if you've not flashed it, but you can check in Settings => About and look at the Android version
