Would a chest of drawers take up less footspace than a wardrobe does? I'm thinking something tall and deep so each boy can have a couple of drawers each? A hanging rail like you mentioned could fit school shirts on.

Also did you scroll down and read all the info on that link I posted (the ebay bunk) it does say, that they can do 2ft 6 wide with 6ft 3 length. How practical that would be with the size of your boys I don't know.

ETA- Scrub that. Just saw your measurement for room to ceiling, so they are out.

I am assumming that a bigger private rent is out of the question? Dopn't you come under overcrowding rules via the council?

Not that it helps with your bedroom problems but I have 1 of my kids toys in our summer house but a cheap shed would do the job too, for them to play in cos the bedroom is too small to hold all toys.

assuming a normal height 8ft. 6in. room, it shouldnt pose too many problems.

Ummm....claustrophobia and bumped heads....I dont know about them...but I literally couldnt sleep in any of those 3 beds - as I would be panicking and "fighting my way out" of them PDQ to be able to take a "good breath of air". Literally impossible to even try to make that set-up work for some of us...

It IS a physical necessity for many people to know they can literally sit straight up in bed and with plenty of "headroom" above them whenever they decide to - and any other situation just wouldnt work for people who feel that way (and its not subject to logic - panic sets in anyway in situations where that isnt possible).

Some way through does need to be found - as even just two people in a room that size must "fight like cat and dog" I would have thought...threee....yikes!!!!

perm or temp? How about hammocks?!! Seriously, it's how they used to get round the problem on ships, and as boys they'll probably find it quite exciting with jealous friends...
  • Spendless....If we get the hanging rails or a canvas wardrobe I think space would be about the same.

I did scroll down on the link, but kids were making lots of noise at the time so might have mis read. Will check again.

They currently have shorty bunks as I am just under 5ft so don't expect to have giants as kids.

Would love to rent a bigger place but round here we are talking £1200 plus and since the max HB we can get is £700 a month we would be struggling to pay the difference. Plus both OH and I are carers so despite working 24/7 we are still classed as DSS as not acceptable to most Landlords.

Our current one is very good and I keep thinking in just a few years it will be a lovely house for just the two of us.

Lol, well the eldest one falls out his bed most nights cos he is such a fidget and the autistic one would freak out. But nice idea.

Yes, I didn't mean hanging rails like the oens that stand on the floor-I have one and it takes as much space poss more than a wardrobe. I was thinking of the sort that hang from the wall, usually found under hallway furniture rather than bedroom eg

    http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/60099791

Also hallway furniture meant for hanging coats often takes up less room than bedroom furniture. I have one also bought from Ikea, but can't remember the name or can find a pic to show you what I eman - will keep looking.

OK, got an idea that should work. Build your own bunks against one wall, but alternately offset them so they look a bit like this when looking at them side on against the wall.

    space-saving-beds.jpg

Now imagine these bunks maybe 10" vertically closer together, and then a thrird bunk above and offset to the right like the bottom one. They should fit along your 8' wall and allow each person to have loads of headroom, even with your low ceiling heights. If you make them 2'6" wide you should still have a clear 8' of space along the opposite wall for a small desk of 2' ( - important for homework etc) and 3x2' wide wardrobes (1 each). This would still leave you with a clear area of floor approx 3'x8'.
