I had this virus on sunday.. spent an awful lot of time fixing this and cleaning my computer yesterday.. it was working fine (and a lot faster too actually!).. thanks to all the guys on the techie forum..

however, I needed to go into ebay today purely to find out what my fees were this month.......

Were you checking your fees so you could phone ebay and ask them to cancel them in light of what happened to you?

Once infected you must clean out all temporary files and internet caches - find a free tool to do it for you. Manually check and if necessary clear the Java cache. I am guessing this is the reason why a re-visit to ebay caused an issue for you.

The next task is to make sure you are running latest versions of the important software on your PC and up to date anti virus software. Run Windows Update but also check third party plug-ins you use like Java, Macro Media are also up to date. The most common route of infection is via known exploits fixed in latest versions.

This is an interesting thread as I have just paid out £55 to get the 'system tools' or whatever it's called virus removed from my computer. I don't know where it came from, I never got any warnings from any site. It made my computer unusable.

Just who did you pay £55 to - because this is likely to be the source of the virus ?
This is not an unknown scam - a "company" posts malware then posts an fix - at cost !!

if youd posted on the techie thread, we could have helped you remove it for free

Hi, yes I should have read the techie thread first, so I was panicing. I paid £55 to McAfee, so it wasn't part of the scam.

I got this on saturday on imdb. My brother spent ages clearing it off and when I went on imdb again (didn't realise it was this site that had caused it) the screen popped up so I closed Internet explorer down and scanned system and all ok, phew!
  • Arhhh I too got this on Sunday I was using ebay so all makes sense that it came from there.... went straight through my MSE without any warnings immobilising it, I cut my interent connection and eventually got MSE to work and did a scan which removed the trojan.

Is quidco compatable with firefox does anyone know? and could someone provide me a link to firefox I was a bit confused as it comes up as mozilla is that right?

    Thanks.

My summary of information is if you get a warning from your virus protection about a page containing dangerous content do not ignore it close the web page. If you continue to the page a bad infection looks to occur - and you will need to read the links here and elsewhere in detail on how to fix things and it will take a long time.

Ebay seem to be aware of the issue but I can find no official alerts or information on the matter.

Just read this article and this post caught me eye thought you all maybe interested in reading it, thanks to the OP:

Yes class-it but eBay has a large team dedicated to such issues - turns out eBay lends out patches of every web page to 3rd parties to do with as they will! How clever's that then?

And unless you opt out in preferences, these ad networks can supposedly display "relevant" ads based on your buying/search history, age range, sex and even where you live! I wonder how they get to know all that information about you? plain.gif

The opt-out is here if anyone's interested, or you can access it via Site Preferences -> Advertising preferences:

    http://cgi6.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?AdPreferenceCmd

    This bit is rather interesting:

We may work with other companies, like websites or ad networks, to show customized ads to you. These partners may have access to some of the information we collect about you. We don't share any of your personal information with our partners, and we have controls in place designed to keep them from identifying you.

It seems a bit confusing to me, it says the ad networks may have access to eBay's information about you, but then it says eBay doesn't share any personal information with the ad networks?

And if eBay doesn't share any personal information, why would it need controls to stop the ad networks identifying you?

Thanks. I have concerns about what ebay is doing. Why because without knowing this you may identify yourself to the other web sites unaware of what information ebay is also passing them on you. What good are any controls now, do they still work?
