Unable to see padlock when accessing 18866

I downloaded firefox to access the secure site of 18866. Just now, I was checking my bill online using firefox and there was no https or padlock showing. I am just wondering whether anybody else is experiencing this. I do not seem to be on the secure site, I recently downloaded IE 6 service pk 1 as I was having problems getting in my hotmail. I do not think, it has got anything to do with it. Please help. Thanks

  • I don't think it matters which browser you use.

    There aren't any padlocks.

18866 does have secure pages to view your account but they do not work with some combinations of web browser/operating system.

When I last looked the default option was to view using secure pages but with the option insecure pages if this did not work.

Maybe they have changed this to detect what browser/operating system you are using and taking you to the most appropriate site! Perosnally I would not consider an insecure site an appropriate one!

Another problem is how easily you can find out your customer number - they provide a freefone number that you ring from a registered phone and it will speak your customer number. Once a 'thief' has this he can add his own phone numbers onto your account as no password are used!

Yes, with firefox, I was able to view using the secure sites. With IE, I was informed, my browser does not support it but still give me the option to use the insecure sites. Today, I have tried with both browser, and no option was given to me. There was no s at the end of http and no padlock so I assume I was accessing the non secure site and this is giving me some concern. Is there a way of knowing whether the site is secure. Just wondering whether other members are having the same problem. Thanks.
  • Yes, exactly the same Marylee.

    Win98SE/IE6 didn't work so I downloaded Firefox.

Win98SE/Firefox DID work - padlock visible. But that was early last week. Since then, no padlock again.

P.S. Either combination still works with the numerous other secure sites I use (OneTel's online billing for example).

I have e-mailed CS, please is the site I am
accessing secure or not. There is no way telling, does not look secure to me now. Do you still access your online bill? I am interesting to know whether
other members see the padlock when they access 18866. Thanks for answering my post.

I think that 18866 hsa deafulted back to offering just the insecure server - probably because so may people could not use the secure one.

I know when I first used 18866 it was this way but I recall that gt94sss2 offered a secure access page for the service - whcih I did use. However, I no longer have the address he supplied and cannot find it on MSE anymore.

gt94sss2 does seem to contribute to the site any more either to ask him!

Hello, I asked the question of no padlock some time ago, however, a padlock did eventually appear on theinvoice page, now it has gone, the other day I got a very big lettered warning from 1886 when I was accessing my invoice to say if you have not got XP or Explorer 6, then the page is not secure and they would take no responsiblity for it, I have Windows ME and Explorer 6, since then I have accessed the page, but it had no padlock on it.

The reason for this message is I came on tonight to ask a question, and so have put it here as it may be to do with 18866. Recently we have had two telephone calls saying we had asked for financial advice. Today we got a call from am American woman, she asked for my husband by name and correct intials, I told her he had not asked for any information and did not do finance, I was his wife and I did the money!!!!! Oh she said you are the one I need to speak to then, 'have you been watching the dollar recently she said' No, I said, and who are you and where are you, she said she was in America and she had in front of her a request from my husband for investment information. We have most DEFINITELY not asked anybody for investment information, I told her we were pensioners and had no money to invest and WHERE DID SHE GET OUR PHONE NUMBER FROM? She said she had no idea, the number was put in front of her? Had I been on any financial sites, I mentioned this one, but told her they do not know my phone number.

As far as we know we have never put our phone number on anything except one or two padlocked sites of very reputable companies, it makes us wonder if 18866 are passing on our info. I will have to read it again, but I did print off the contract and I think it was mentioned there. Has anybody else had any of these phone calls? We are on the Bt list of no company ringing us, ie double glazing, kitchen people etc, I think its called Telephone Preference Services, but apparently it does not cover foreign countries.

The first call we had a couple of weeks back, the chap ended up swearing at me for not putting my husand on!!

Any help from anyone as to where they get your number from would oblige, could be the phone directory, but doubt it. Best wishes oap
