  • I dont understand why you didnt just go in to a branch of your bank & withdraw the money over the counter & then go to Thomas Cook & pay cash as they'd requested?? You can't have been that bothered about saving the money if you were happy to ring the 0871 number to make the payment.....

Its hard to take the money out of the bank when you are in a shopping centre and the bank doesn't have a branch there, plus its a Saturday and the bank in question is most likely closed anyway.

My reason for using the number was to see what the charge was, but it did not advertise the fact, rather opting to tell me AFTER it had taken the surcharge. This was my problem, not the charge but the fact they do not tell you until it was too late. Imagine the same situation at Tesco's. You put your card into the machine, enter your pin and then you find you have been charged an extra fee. No one would stand for that.

Debit card is free definitely, only charge is credit card.

I understand you are talking specifically about Thomas Cook online bookings steph. But generally I have noticed more and more holiday/leisure industry companies charging for using a debit card (not just credit cards).

I got a cash card from Thomas cook and loaded £1749.18 which equated to 2809 usd, on returning from holiday i decided to cash in the card and checked the exchange rate on 2,427 usd at 1.6 usd to british pound which equated to around £1490.00, I got my ticket which showed buy back price at 1.848700 to the british pound which meant i received £1313.33 thats a rip off of approx £170.00, what can i do about this , any suggestions welcome:mad:

Did you ask the exchange rate before you sold the $s back, theres always a difference between buy and sell, it would have been the same if you'd had notes, travellers cheques or a cash card. The problem here is you changed more than you spent, you should have changed less in the first place and had other back up plans or left the $s on the card for your next trip.
