No, they would ONLY take cash, there was no option to pay by either debit or credit card.

Even if you could pay via credit card in store, they would have still charged you the extra 2.5%. Could you not have paid £250 one day and the balance the next day? Or sent them a cheque?

Like I said, I'm not quibbling the charge, just the method they used to take it. If there was an option to press 1 to confirm the payment then I would have known and backed out. Every step of the process was proceeded with a question about the details being correct until the very last step.

I thought companies had to confirm the exact amount you will pay before processing the payment.

I booked a holiday with Chevron Air Holidays this afternoon and, although I prefer to book by credit card because of the added security, was going to pay by debit card as I assumed there would be an additional fee for using a credit card but no - there was no charge for either credit or debit card. I quickly reached for the credit card (which will of course be paid off in full!!).

Appologies slightly off topic but aren't you awarded the same secureties paying by say Visa Debit as you would be if you had payed by a credit card.I have often wondered.

Do you go out of your way to be obnoxious or are you just a rude and unhelpful person in general.

Really, your posts assume what you want to think and then you accuse people of lying.

    What a !!!!!!!

Quick reality check-s/he's not being obnoixious and rude, s/he's just pointing out facts. And you're not being accused of lying, it's just being suggested there may be a more accurate assessment to be made of the situation.

No you're not. Only a credit card offers the security needed if a company goes bust for example.

You don't get charged if you book your holiday through Barclaycard Thomas Cook and use a Barclaycard to make the payment. You also get free travel insurance.

With flythomascook.com you need to pay with a VISA electron card to avoid a card fee. For a Thomas Cook package holiday I suspect there would not be a fee for any debit card.

Thomas Cook is hardly likely to go bust, but if it did you could reclaim your money via the VISA chargeback scheme if you paid with any VISA card - electron, debit or credit. Also you can get the full legal protection of the consumer credit act on the whole holiday cost if you pay a small amount of the bill by credit card and the rest by another means.

Debit card is free definitely, only charge is credit card.

You sound very definite. Have you something to back this up. Ryanair and Easyjet, for example, charge for debit cards and so did the last holiday company I booked with although they reduced the charge as a "concession" after I complained. Strangely they would have accepted a cheque without charge.

As you have edited my quote, i will post again i was talking about Thomas Cook only either online, telephone or shop you do not pay for using a debit card, read the terms and conditions on the website it will confirm this. The shops will only take a cheque issued by the bank or building society or 1 of your own up to the value its protected by with your card.
As for Ryanair, Easy jet, thomascookfly.com i don't know about them cause i don't use them.
