i always take them down 12 days after christmas as thsi si the tradition started in victorian times. the victorians trees started to go off around 12 days after teh big day and it was believed that if the needles all went brown and dropped in your house then little wood sprites would inhibit your home and cause mischief until teh next christmas came round. to match i always put them up 12 days before too.:T The best things in life are FREE! :T0

They won't go up until about 7-10 days before Christmas depending when Christmas Day is, and they always come down before we go back to school ( even though my mother tells me it's bad luck every year!)0

last year we didn't put up any decorations as FIL had just died and to be honest none of us felt like it.
However what we did do was to fill the room with candles....different sizes and to be honest it was so nice that's what we'd be doing again this year.2014 Target;

Mine used to go up the first weekend in December unless the first weekend was right at the start of the month like it is this year, then I met OH and inherited Arnie so it had to be put in a place where he couldn't get to the tree. This year we have Casey and it will be her first Christmas and it will be an absolute nightmare keeping her away from the tree!
We are moving house on the 1st so think the tree will be in the conservatory where I can shut the door on it and the other decorations will be in the living room where I will put tinsel on the big buch of twigs I have."Life may not always be the party you wish for, but whilst here you may aswell dance"!!!

if it's traditionally the twelve days of xmas should it not be twelve days over xmas rather than twelve before and after? that would make 24 days of xmas
me, i make a big deal of xmas, my tree and decs go up on the 1st, (try) and get my cards posted around then too, and put up cards as they arrive. i usually take it down at the end of the month tho i don't recall a fixed date? if there was a traditional date we did it as kids i dont' remember tho my mum says it was the night of the 2nd for my aunts bday on the third when they were kids.
it's just me in the flat this year so the effort will only be for me. normally i have a couple of drinks, put on xmas movies and have a grand switching on (yes i am THAT sad!) and wrap all the pressies to go under the tree in one night. but i'm going home the night of the first so i might prepare the pressies ect beforehand.0
