As far as i know it is supposed to be 12 days before and 12 days after. Because my DH insists we have a real tree i always buy one and put it up on the 1st December.
I must admit though as soon as new years day is over i start taking all the tree and decorations down.
I prefer to have the decorations up for longer before christmas and put away as soon as possible into the new year.
Always works out well for us.

I'll probably have the decorations up by the 1st, and they probably won't come down until mid-January. It's not very traditional, I know, but this will be our first Christmas in this house, and I'll be off to my parents a week before Christmas, and not back until after New Year's, so in a way my window for feeling Christmassy in our new house is kind of short! I'd like to get a few extra days of enjoyment out of the decorations, so I'll have them up a bit longer. Really, though, I think it's up to you - if you want to start decorating now, why not?

Mine go up on the 12th of December and come down on the 6th Jan. Sometimes I do take them down a little bit early though, I get sick of them after New Year.

Would never put them up in Novemeber - There's a woman down the road got all hers done - inside, ouside lights, the lot.

i put them up the 1st weekend of december normally, but like to have a fresh start to the new year so they are always down before 1st jan.

i looooove christmas music too, and like to listen to it as much as i can. Already had it thrown from the cd player in the office once so far this year!! lol
    Love this site!
  • In our house they go up twelve days before and get taken down twelve days after Christmas.
There is a house opposite me which had lights (in the form of reindeers pulling Santa's sleigh) in the front room window the whole year round. They only lit them during December. Unfortunately the tenants have moved on and taken the reindeer with them and the new neigbours have not followed the tradition.........yet.
  • When I was a kid it was the first Sunday in December for them going up and 6 Jan for them coming down.

I put my decs up on the 30th November (in the evening) so that its all done on the 1st December, and then they come down on the 1st January!!! I love Christmas, and like it to start as soon as possible, but once Christmas is over, im keen to get them down ASAP, i keep them up until new year for the children!!!
