Christmas Decorations - When?

Can someone please sort out an issue that is going on in my house. When is the correct time to put up the tree and decorations and when does it come down again?:xmastree:

Well, people seem to be putting up their Christmas decorations earlier every year. I usually put them up on 15th December (on my birthday) but many put them up earlier! The time to take them down is the 6th January.
  • Hi, before we had children we always put our tree up on Christmas eve, before we went to the early evening service.

As a concession to the small people it goes up during the weekend before christmas.

Decorations are taken down on Twelfth Night, which is 6th January. I do this when the children are at school.

We have a real tree which comes with roots, and is dug from the ground a few days before Christmas. Any earlier, and it's dropping its needles, and looking soooooo sad! I'd get completely fed up with the decorations if they went up any earlier; this way they look fresh all through the holiday. We also decorate our downstairs rooms with lots of greenery from our garden - DH and DD are brilliant at that; thay have real flair for design.

Only exception is cards. We put strings in swags from our picture rail, and put cards onto them as they arrive.

  • We used to put them up on Christmas Eve when I was a kid. I loved it, then going off to midnight mass. Now we tend to be a bit more haphazard, didn't make it at all last year! :o I like them up the week before Christmas, but not before that. They're always down on the 5th or 6th.
  • I must admit that by Boxing Day i am HATING the decorations... So, I will leave it until the week before I think. ...

    Thanks for the replies :xmassmile

I am very sad I have a huge collection of snowmen which I love and usually put them around the house on 25th November the rest of the Christmas stuff goes up the day my daughter gets back from uni because we like doing it together.
My snowmen which I call winter decor go away on 2nd February which I believe is Candlemas. It does depend on wants happening in the house and if we are going away etc.

    Sad I know

It's supposed to be 12 bays before and 12 days after isnt it??

My mate put hers up 2 days ago though!! My lad loves making his own decorations to hang on the tree, so we are busy making them at the moment in preperation for the tree going up. Which won;t be till mid december

We put ours up on my Grandad's birthday (13th) which is 12 days before. I'm lucky if i tolerate them to new year though ;) down they come!
  • Hi, i personaly put mine up on the first day of December to coincide with the opening of the advent calander.

We are often told by family and friends that it is bad luck to put up a christmas tree before a certain date or we should take it down before a certain date, but i think it is up to the individual if you want to put it up now then you do just that, after all shops start selling us the idea of Christmas long before we have finished celebrating Bonfire night, so surely we can also jump on the band wagon.

If we stop to think about what Christmas is really about (a delightful gimmick), then there is no right or wrong answer of when the best or most appropriate time is, to put up the tree.

Christmas comes once a year so enjoy all of the things that come with it at a time when you want to celebrate it.
