It's a personal choice really. But I have the iPhone 4 and only recently returned back a HTC Desire HD. Both are great handsets, but the iPhone 4 is way ahead of the Desire HD. Yes, the HTC has a great large screen and unlike the iPhone has full bluetooth file sharing. Something that I wish Apple would incorporate into their handsets instead of being greedy with iTunes. But, the iPhone is just plainly far better than the HTC.

make calls - HTC, but tough call. Sound quality is better on the HTC and there's the "you can't use your left hand" thing on the iPhone - which really is much more noticeable than I was expecting - holding in your left hand instantly knocks off 3 bars of signal. On the other hand, there are some absolutely *mental* quirks in the HTC's contact management (especially the Facebook integration) that make just calling / texting the same person repeatedly *really* fiddly.

(If we can count video calls, too, iPhone wins hands down - FaceTime is awesome and really well integrated.)

satnav - HTC. There is a free version available for the iPhone, but it's not as good.

internet browsing - iPhone, just. The screen's smaller, but a good resolution - and the interface just makes for slicker moving back and forth. Also more intuitive at picking up wifi etc than the Desire HD. Of course, there are the Flash issues...

email collection - iPhone. Simple as pie to set up on both - but you can poll more frequently on the iPhone without worrying about battery life.

photos - iPhone. The camera flash isn't as good, but iPhone takes really nice photos on both cameras. And browsing your photos afterwards is *much* slicker on the iPhone.

Overall, having owned both, I'd recommend the iPhone every day of the week. It looks better, has a slicker (if more limited) interface and is easier to use. It also has a *much* better battery life than the Desire HD - it's not the end of the world if you don't charge the iPhone every night, it will last 2 days. To get the best out of the Desire HD (as it's set up out of the box), it needs to be charged every 8 hours or so, with moderate use.

    satnav : better

This just isn't true. In terms of free options, the HTC's google navigation is streaks ahead of the iPhone equivalent (navfree)

To be honest the comes down to personal choice but i have owned both iphone 3G and HTC desire

    My verdict from previous models

    Iphone

    Very very user friendly
uncustomise-able (from a very heavy tech backround view)

    HTC
The basic HTC sense OS is ok but if you want to go deeper ie customise it can be very technical and you have to be careful as androids market isnt as safeguarded as appstore is
Really customise-able for example ive got a playstation 1 on mine XD

Thats the major 2 differences between the 2 i prefer the HTC desire but thats because im a massive nerd and i like to get alot out of my technology but if you dont require the high freedom factor to do some crazy things/or your not confident to do these things i would deffinetly advise on the iphone as its alot easier to follow and its alot easier to revert if anthing goes wrong.

But as mentioned before the summer should yeild alot of new phones for example the rumor for iphone 5 is imminent and theres alot of dual core phones coming out now.

also a note on the galaxy i do feel it is a nice phone but my opinion is the HTC is a vast improvement my friend has one and it always locks up for her and seems slow out of the box.

My preference is iPhone, having had the Desire, Desire HD, Defy and Galaxy S, just don't like the Android OS as much as ios, there is no iTunes equivalent, Double Twist doesn't come close, resale is better on the iPhone, and the ability to go to an Apple Genius for an immediate exchange for a faulty product is a great service.

Amazon MP3, download straight to your phone and you can back up your songs by dragging and dropping to your computer / laptop whenever you want.

ios may of set the bar but now it is playing catch up in lots of ways.

The Desire HD has a shocking battery life. After an over night charge, users are finding that when using the apps and features of the phone that they need to charge there phones around 5pm the same day. Other than that they are faultless and better to the Iphone.

Im going to get a sony ericsson arc :j

I would just point out both of these are a bit large imo for a mobile phone, I'd get the Desire Z.

    Both what? HD and iP4?

    iPhone4: 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3
    Dezire Z: 119.0 x 60.4 x 14.2
