Also, there is a big difference in price between the iphone and the HTC phones.
  • I have a HTC Desire HD. It's a cracking phone, I'll discuss it in relevance to the things you want from your phone..

make calls - it does this pretty well. It has an excellent 'transfer your phone' function which helps you get your phone book from your old mobile. You tell it the make and model, it describes how to do it. Once you add different accounts (e.g. Facebook, Linkedin, Yahoo mail contacts) it combines them into one super-addressbook.

satnav - it comes with HTCs own satnav tool and maps BUT you need to pay to use it. Which is annoying, so most people use Google Navigation. This is ok, but i prefer my car sat nav. It's pretty awesome when walking. I'm not sure the iPhone has this

internet browsing - great experience. Quick. Loads near any web page. Plays flash videos with no problems. You can also download the Opera and Firefox browsers.

email collection - You can set it up to use most email systems - i use it to get my work 'Exchange server' / Outlook emails, my gmails and i've got a separate app for my Yahoo emails.

photos - I'm not a massive fan of the camera, the focusing is a bit slow and i find it hard to snap pictures of my toddler.. but i get the same issue with my SLR so i think its my toddlers fault! Otherwise, the camera is fine - it's got 'real time' picture filters that are specific to HTC and you can also do 'post-processing' on the photos.

The biggest downside is the battery. If i use the phone how i like to (watch 30 mins of video on the train in the morning, browse the net a little, a few phone calls) then it would be on its warning for low battery power by the time i travel back home. I'm considering getting a larger battery (you can get one with 30% more capacity)

I've no experience of the iPhone to compare it to though. Regarding no iTunes... erm, so what? I have an iPod classic - when i want my music on my mobile, i just copy the mp3 files onto the memory card. You just plug in the USB cable, drag them into the My Documents>Music folder. If you want to get more high-tech, you could use the WinAmp app which will wireless sync your music collection between your PC and phone.

Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to post such a detailed reply - I really appreciate it.
  • If you can wait a few weeks then buy neither. Check out the Samsung galaxy s2 and LG optimus 3D. Both have much better specs, dual core etc.

I don't see not having itunes as a problem. I don't have an iPhone but know loads who have one. Synching wirelessly VIA WiFi, Bluetooth, 3g connection, USB cable, SD card swap etc are various methods possible. Loads of apps to do various types of synching. Many of the apps are free. Loads of apps are free that have equalizers etc that are better than stock Android music app.

Flexible memory as per your needs on Android. I started out with two 4gb cards on my two HTC desire phones, then upped them to 16g each, then 32gb each.

But accessories will be fewer on many Android handsets.

Browsing is a breeze on newer Android handsets. You can tether other devices VIA USB or Bluetooth or WiFi hotspot features. Camera and video is ok. You can flash custom software if you like such things.

See YouTube videos on the devices you are interested in.

  • Good luck ever getting that flashy Samsung Galaxy S2 upgrades to any new versions of Android. Samsung are terrible at supporting their old handsets

Regarding music, I think Spotify is awesome application for android. For £9.99 a month, you can play any music you want also offline (without connection to internet). There is no point to use iTunes when you can use Spotify instead.
  • I suggest you iphone 4 because your all required features available in this handset and it's a very user friendly

Make calls - To make a call on iPhone, tap a name or number. That’s it. You can tap to call from just about anywhere: a name in your contacts list, a number on a website or text message, even a phone number on a map listing. Voice Control lets you speak a name or number to make a call.

    satnav : better

internet browsing - Surf faster. Surf more. You’ll love surfing the web with Safari on iPhone 4. Thanks to the fast Apple A4 chip, web pages render quickly, so you can do more browsing in less time

email collection - Have email, will travel. With Mail on iPhone 4, wherever you go, your email goes too. iPhone works with popular email providers including MobileMe, Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, and AOL — and most industry-standard IMAP and POP mail systems. Look at email in a whole new way. Many accounts. One inbox. Follow the thread. Type smart. See what’s attached. Find the hidden message.

photos - 5-megapixel camera with LED flash Take beautiful, detailed photos using the 5-megapixel camera with built-in LED flash. The advanced backside illumination sensor captures great pictures even in low light. And the front-facing camera makes it easy to take self-portraits.

You work for a Mobile selling company by any chance!
Your post reads more like a sales pitch than a information post.

    Also:
No flash player with iPhone (so browsing may be fast but boring and unusable)
8-Megapixel camera on the Desire HD, crisp clear pics (and 720p video)
Email - I do everything through Gmail anyway so i've got it all every where I go (push email standard with Gmail)

    second thing.

Desire HD has a faster ARM Snapdragon processor 1Ghz compared to iPhone's A4 (which maxs out at 1Ghz on the ipad)
With a small tweek the Desire HD can go up to 1.5Ghz safely.
Replaceable battery and extendible memory in the Desire HD.

Android phones are not locked in to a single OS build, there's 2 main OS's "AndroidOS" and "AOSP" (Android Open Source Project)
Both are fully supported and backed by Google. So if a manufacturer stops updating the phone you will find the community updateing and keeping it current.

in the end it's a personal choice.
I'd choose the Desire HD over an iPhone...

You right it's personal choice, but at least Apple releasaes firmware updates for older devices, once most Android devices are out the door there is one or two upgrades then thats it. Your only choice is to then go to the modding community and any upgrade blows the warranty.

Also the differeing makers of Andoid also put there own UI on it, Sense, Mediascape, Blur etc so it's not a consistant UI across venders. The iPhone is far more user friendly, albeit locked to one vendor.

I have just bought the iphone4 and my husband has htc deisre which Iset up fr him.

I honestly don't think for the basic user there's much difference so far - you can get nearly all of the apps on both - except specialist ones my husband cant download specific music ones for guitar playing etc which are available on iphone. So far tehre are some apps I prefer on the htc tbh but haven't explored the iphone fully yet.

If the list you gave are all you want to do then htc you will get for half the price so I would say go for that one.

Music is good on htc, interent good sat nav is too. I think they are all good on iphone too but it's twice the price.
