Question for parents.........baby clothes and washing

  • Thanks all for your replies, as you can probably tell, I don't have children. I had my suspicions and yes, I have been annoyed as they were lovely clothes and I was pee'd off that they were just chucked. I shall now tell her, or advise her that they can be washed and the stains will come out. She's not loaded either and it is such a shame, they were so lovely! As it goes I won't be buying anything from Next, Gap, Monsoon etc.
Thanks again for your help, maybe I will buy some vanish and take with me next time I go :D.

There may be something behind this - are you sure she likes the outfits you're buying? I'm sure they're lovely but when littles ones are little you do get bought a lot that isn't all to the parents' taste, so she may be looking for an excuse as to why they're not being worn.

Is there a chance she's done the decent MSE thing and passed them on and is too embarrassed to tell you?

No, she has been with me many times and we have loved the outfits. Cute little tights with lovey embroidered dresses, skirts and little trousers. All from really nice places and she has put baby in them when they have gone anywhere nice or for occasions. They really were lovely.

I have a 13 week old and have watched clothes after leaks and it has always come out in a 40 degree wash with Fairy washing powder. They have never been left stained.

Why would she need to wash them or even try to make them clean when she has kind generous relatives filling up the baby's wardrobe faster than she can wear stuff?

I think you should all stop buying her stuff nd when she has to buy it all herself she will be more sensible.

Of course the clothes come clean.. eventually.. I have had bibs and vests and sleepsuits soaking in napisan and boil washed them and they are still stained! Darn things!! But they'll do the next one!

Just wondering how I got beautifully white washable nappies week after week if this is the case.

Never heard anything so daft in all my life.

If this is the case, that 'normal' washing doesn't cut it, any tips on ways to get the clothes nice and clean again? Or is it true that they stain?

Normal washing will leave horrid stains. You need to buy some Napisan and put some in the washing machine along with whatever you usually use e.g. washing powder, fabric conditioner, etc. Even with Napisan, some stains may be persistent. If it looks too "yuck" despite being cleaned a couple of times then, yes, I'd just chuck it away. Tbh, I don't think it's worth buying lots of "nice" outfits for babies - they don't know, they don't care and they don't have a busy social life. Buy them for special events but not everyday use - the waste is annoying. Even if you keep the clothes pristine, unless you are saving them for hand-me-downs then you'll still get very little wear out of them because they get outgrown so quickly.

I've always found poo stains usually come out quite easily, maybe with a prewash or just a bit of extra washing powder. Sunshine does help too. Much easier to get out than the dreaded carrot stains or some other food stains.

The only time I've ever thrown something away was maybe once or twice with an old vest or sleep suit when they'd had a tummy bug and it was really yucky. But normally things would just go in the wash.

Maybe the OP's sister needs to start reading the Old Style Board for some tips.;)

um ok personally i think she is being a bit extreme.but everyone brings up a baby as they see fit.

but having said that, is she a first time mum ? as that would explain why she is listening to other mums/friends who have given her this awful advice. when your a first time mum you often do the most silliest of things because sometone told you who had a child thats what you should do. having a first child is a huge learning curve.not all stains will come out even with fantastic stains removers, but sometimes after a couple of washes their is such a tiny mark left ( the type you can only see in a certina light if you squint your eye, lol) that it is absoluty fine for wearing. will your sister throw away her clothes if baby gets poo on them ? i've had many a baby have an explosive nappy on me,lol.

i knew of a couple who weened their first child on shredded wheat and that alone. as they were told you had to be careful with salt levels in food. and as shredded wheat said on pack only contains wheat and no added salt they only gave this to their child. i was shocked ,but they really didn't see what was wrong. they didn't even consider veg or fruit. they were later given better advice and changed the diet.

wait till she has 3 or 4 children alot of what she does now will change.

This has to be one of the most bonkers things I've ever heard! How on earth did people cope when all nappies were made out of terry towelling!

However it isn't that common for outer clothes to be stained by a 7 month old - what is she feeding her on?
