If you were building a system though, the receipt for all the parts plus the software would be enough surely?

Guess so. Just don't want people going buying the software on its own expecting they'll get a cheapo upgrade later.

same sort of website was posted before by the same person and got deleted and dont lie "i've bought from these guys twice and it's the real deal. Worked on a complete home-build."

    LIE!

Don't thank me too quickly! Just done a bit of checking and it seems that MS will only accept an upgrade request if it's accompanied by a receipt for a fully built system with XP pre-loaded on it - bitzers don't count by the looks :(

That's shocking, tying people into manufacturers pre built computers.

Another reason why I'll avoid Vista then!

Yes. Most places like Ebuyer have you buy a piece of hardware with it, so that they're less likely to get into trouble, but in all fairness, Microsoft isn't going to stop paying customers when they have piracy to fight.

Where people WILL have problems with OEM versions when they build their own PCs is the recent free upgrades to Windows Vista. To apply for this you need a complete PC receipt from the OEM.

Most people that buy an OEM version I believe will find that they have trouble getting the free Vista upgrade.

I wonder where that will leave Aria, then:
To claim your Vista upgrade, you must supply your Voucher, COA (Licence Number), and Proof of Purchase... Please retain your Aria Invoice!
The above is included in the info given by Aria on the webpage selling the OEM copy of Win XP Home edition with Vista upgrade voucher.
In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?

    Define better please.

Windows Vista is the replacement for Windows XP. Over the next few years Windows XP will be supported less and Vista will take over. If you're buying an Operating System it makes sense from a security and support perspective to buy the latest one in my opinion.

Or of course you could forget Vista and it's bloatiness, stick with XP and move to Linux when XP becomes unusable

Anyone buying into Vista so early is a fool to themselves, Even Nvidia have said not to expect Vista compatible drives until about 02/07 there are going to be a lot of hardware manufacturers that wont bother developing drivers for vista for items they are fazing out.

Look at your hardware then see when the last driver update was released for it, if it was 2005 then you can bet the manufacturer is not going to spend extra money updating old drivers when they can spend the same for newer products that your going to have to buy to replace the hardware they wont write drivers for to make them vista compatible.....its a cruel world :)

    2 things

    1) You cant buy XP OEM without buying hardware to go with it, its against the licensing rules

    2) Never trust companies who can't spell!

    1) Total Crap

Anyone that builds new PC's can buy OEM XP without hardware.

    2) Get your facts right before posting :D
