Okay. Sorry for the snarky replies. I wasn't trying to mislead anyone or represent this purchase as anything other than it appeared to be (re-read my comments if you want.) If the mods think the thread is misleading then I would really rather it was deleted entirely. I'm sorry I got everyone's back up with this.

I suspect by using 'reclaimed' serials LowCostXP are buying old PCs in bulk from offices, probably from liquidators and receivers of companies being wound-up and are reaping the license numbers. I don't believe the serial they gave me will ever be blacklisted for that reason.

What makes the Aria deal any more 'legit'? It's also an OEM product. Where's the guarantee you get a real serial number?

MS will never run the risk of killing supposedly unlicensed copies of any of their OSes. The risks of making a mistake and shutting down a large legitimate operation are just too high (imagine a volume license number gets in the kill DB by accident.) Under pressure they still allowed security updates to users whose copies failed WGA.

    ARIA are a legit company

the Daily Telegraph used them to build a Vista Ready PC for under £200,Bought ALL the parts there

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/connected/main.jhtml?xml=/connected/2006/08/15/ecrboot15.xml

and it is not legal to re-use the COA, it's legal to re-use the same base unit(although even that is a grey area as the licience should be transferred to the new owner)

and sounds like YOUR website I suspect

Hey! I apologised and requested a delete. I played my cards face up from the start and have agreed that it's not 100% legit. This is NOT my website, and I have nothing to do with LowCostXP beyond having purchased from them and now apparently being on their email list.

My question about Aria was not double edged or snide. I was honestly asking how a potential customer can tell that it's legit from looking at the website.

Watch where you're slinging that mud, pal.

    Ah, you mean like Farepak?
  • I have to agree with hiro, whether you think the offer he is suggesting is legit or not, this site is full of loopholes in order to profit. While I quite agree that there are different levels of morality, it seems many people have some real double standards. Where do you guys draw the line? After all with a mispricing, at the end of the day will mean someone somewhere- corporate organisation or not, loses out.

I am not saying whether I think any of these things are right or not, merely there is a very thin line between what many of you would happily consider doing laughing cheerfully about a "bargain" and other very similar things that you consider to be morally wrong.

Just an observation, but it is interesting how judgemental some people are...
  • When someone accepts they made a mistake, apologises and requests a delete, isn't it time to back off? It was clearly a dodgy deal but I think hirO posted in good faith for recipients to deal with according to their own morality. He or she didn't deserve such derision.

I'm sure you can legally buy OEM XP software with as little as a £1.00 mouse. MS changed the rules not too long back.
Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow.
  • Have a look at the wayback machine, http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.lowcostxp.co.uk/. Their site has not been there for long. Their domain was only registered on 20 January 2006

Oh just get Linux instead and break free from the Windows Tax.
Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.
