Small Business...Waste Disposal!?!

  • I'm glad i'm not the only one who thinks this is crazy. The other day i helped a relative clear their loft and not only did we have to be extremely careful not to trash his Mercedes that he has worked extremely hard for when loading it up but it also took 5 trips to the dump rather that one in the van!?!

Also the customer is always looking to get the best prices for the work required so by adding on all the additional costs for waste management, i will price myself out of the market and the 'fly tippers' will generate even more work/rubbish!?!

As i said, i want to do everything by the book but i also need to eat and a roof over my head....

Because as a business you would be paid to do the work. As a homeowner you pay council tax to cover waste disposal.

As a business I pay tax and Council tax so i'm paying to clear their rubbish too and generally speaking i don't charge for clearing rubbish. The cost of clearing their rubbish is being paid for by the client or me at the end of the day its being paid of through tax.

Your not really getting the point i'm trying to make. The reason for waste carriers licenses are to ensure that waste is dealt with correctly.

More like your trying to side step the arguement..

eg.... You the builder (without waste carrier license) find random lumps of what 'looks like' rubble, you take this to the local tip chuck it in the general rubble skip. These lumps later turn out to contain PAH's, thus you have contaminated anybody you have came in contact with, and all the rubble in that skip, putting tip workers in danger.

Oh please, totally hypothetical nonsense......Can I ask you what you do for a living?

Your arguement is very much like the risk adverse nonsense we have had to put up with under the previous Government.I can just see the job advert now "Council Waste carriers licence compliance officer" £60k a year with allowances..

I'm off to bed, its been nice debating and I will be here again tomorrow ..Night all
  • Just get a skip on the job then charge it to the customer.

Im not sidestepping any argument, i'm giving you one of the most prominent reasons for these types of licenses.

No! Not hypothetical, happens everyday by unlicensed operators like yourself. You can, I'm a student and work part time.

My argument is totally not risk adverse, I fully appreciate the risks and would plan around those risks. If I was risk adverse I would advise not dealing with waste at all as the risks could be too high.
As for having more officers dealing with this, yes its a good idea. Then there is more chance of irresponsible businesses like yours risking peoples health being stopped.
Ive tried getting a grant towards buying a woodburning heating system for my workshop, to burn wood waste, shavings etc ,getting rid of a waste product, become "Carbon Nuetral"

If you are burning wood, you wouldn't become carbon neutral.
Currently nearly all of my waste product goes in Landfill.

    Possibly because you don't recycle.

I have sometimes had work done by a contractor at the end of which I agree to take the rubbish to the dump for a cheaper bill. I currently have a back door, a shower screen and a shower which belongs 'in a museum' in need of a trip to the dump: sadly the back door won't fit in the car!

Sometimes when I'm given the choice I'll pay for the contractor to remove it.

Round my way, even private householders now need a permit to take stuff to the tip if it's in a trailer or a van. And with that they can do one tip 12x a year. As my car is "van-shaped", even though it has seats and windows, I'd still need a permit.

Advertise that on freecycle, or to a local reclaiming yard that sells retro fittings to people doing up old houses.

Business rates IS a tax as we receive no servcies for paying it.I also pay Council tax on my home so I do pay for waste services. With the waste carriers licence I or the customer are expected to pay twice.

Wrong , in fact you do become Carbon Neutral if your burning wood as a waste product.Just had a letter this morning from the Carbon Trust sayiny there are no grants available but interest free loans to help companies become more enviromentally friendly.

    Possibly because you don't recycle.

Wrong again , we do recycle glass from old windows which go into a skip ,which we have to pay for.

You didn't read my posts did you, either that or didn't take it in,

I have a 13yd enclosed skip that is emptied as and when I wish..

I transport my waste from the job to the skip outside my workshop.

What are you studying? Health & Safety?, Public sector? Local Government? Your an ideal candidate for the public sector given your mindset of creating non jobs ,mass over regulating and the nanny state.

I repeat the best way of stopping fly-tipping is hitting the culprits hard when they are caught ,which currently they are not.Don't strangle small business with regulations and increased costs. How about giving waste carriage licences out free and making the fly-tippers pay for the costs?.

I ask again, how will making people pay for a waste transport licence stop fly tipping?
