I mean..... If you try telling me that holding a smouldering cigarette, peering through a cloud of smoke and trying to drive at the same time, isnt a risk then I dont know what is! Also I don't know of even one smoker who uses the ash tray!! instead the window seems to be the popular alternative!
Not only that but you're absolutely destroying your car - I saw a 2 year old Golf for sale once, 40k miles, FVSH etc. At about half the price it should've been.
Why? The interior was absolutely ruined with fag burns :eek:0 -
IIRC they have actually had convictions - all they need to do is show that you were not in a position to be in proper control of the vehicle.
Of course there have been convictions, by numpty magistrates without legal representation. The question is has there been appeals and convictions overturned? i.e. "test cases".0 -

My motto is drinks only and they should be in a bottle so you can just quickly squirt. People seem to be so confident of their driving skills because they are never tested. If something jumped out in the road, its a lot easier to avoid it by steering with two hands rather than one.
It's why you'll never see professional race/car drivers with one hand.
The offence is "not being in proper control of the vehicle" under dangerous driving and driving without due care and attention sections of the Road Traffic Act and the Construction and Use Regulations.
And yes, eating whilst driving, is considered to be not in proper control. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

Fag and a brew - fine.
Butty and a bottle of pop - yep.
Fag and a butty - never, shear bad manners.

Main thing about eating/drinking/smoking in a vehicle, is that first it's another distraction, but invariably (mainly smoking but not limited to) the rubbish is chucked out the window.
Personally I don't think it should be allowed. There has been many an accident due to hot drinks in laps, and cigarettes lighters going awol. etc. .. but then there has been many an accident due to flying beasties.
There are enough distractions as it is without adding unnecessary ones
I myself have never stopped so fast and lept out like a loony when a 10 foot spider popped out from the sun visor and said hello one morning...
Yes his legs were easily 10 foot, and he was pumping 50kg dumbbells....0 -
i will eat and drink when driving. i always have a sports bottle of water by the gearstick bit so i can have a drink, sometimes food wise i will have a bag of mints/boiled sweets down there or if its a really long drive and i just want to get there or an early start i will have a cheese sarnie sat on the passenger seat so i can reach without taking my eyes off the road, have a bit and then put it back. crumbs are par for the course but can be hoovered.0

I assume they meant "on an empty motorway " rather than "on the M25 at rush hour"
lol show me an empty motorway (during daylight hours) and ill give you a tenner0 -
I'll drink from a plastic bottle and that's about it. I've tried eating crisps etc, but the crumbs go everywhere and you get grease on the steering wheel... just no! I can't enjoy the food if I have the distraction of driving, and trying to eat would be a distraction to my driving... it's not for me.0

I've done a lot of silly things while driving in my younger days. I've even been known to eat a KFC chicken meal before while driving on the motorway. Now I wouldn't go that extreme but I'd happily drink a bottle of water or eat a sandwich if I was in a rush.0
