have i bought a verizon iphone?

Options
hi all. i just bought an iphone 4 off a guy i know . he says its brand new, and unlocked.
i have noticed there is no sim card slot on side or top of the phone. having googled it the only thing i can see is verizon( a us network i think) made a few changes to their iphone including removing sim card slot as their iphone doesnt need a sim and lots of talk of gsm (?) and the like.
i want to know is this phone usable? how can i put my sim in?
the guy said he tested it this morning with his sim and it worked but will have back off me if i want. thing is, its 32g and a good price so would like to keep it. any help appreciated. thanks

Fire it up without a SIM, and see if there are settings for the features listed here: http://osxdaily.com/2011/02/16/att-iphone-vs-verizon-iphone-differences/

If it is a Verizon one, it is completely useless except in the US and a few eastern places.
  • thanks for that, but i cant fully test as no sim. some of the features i could test as in, is caller id option in settings menu, no its not but cant check if you have to manually do it as cannot phone aumber to see. signs point more to cdma iphone which is the verizon one. im gonna phone the guy and tell him i want my money back i think. thanks for your help xx

Also check that it's not a knock off clone.. there are plenty about, see if the back comes off (gently).

Are you sure there is not a 2mm hole on the side of the phone. Put a paperclip in to eject the sim slot!

As stated if this is a Verizon iPhone 4 it's not going to work as designed for CDMA not UK GSM networks which have sim cards (many US non-GSM phones have no sim cards (or there equivalent!) and as such no sim card slot).

In old school terms :p your trying the equivalent of using a Betamax tape in a VHS player- GSM and CDMA just aren't compatible.
  • thanks everyone. i have left a message for guy asking for my money back just waiting to see what he says. fingers crossed.
im reluctant to even hold it in a certain way now as its going back so i wont try loosen the back in case guy says i tampered with it.
there is definatly no small hole to open sim slot as there is no sim slot at all.
    i feel a bit stupid :(
hope i dont get stuck with it, will be even worse if its a fake.

It won't be for Verizon if it says AT&T, only other problem you will have is that ALL AT&T handsets are locked, so you will not be able to ever update the software.

There must be a sim slot on the right side (when you are holding it face up), it takes a mini-sim so the sim slot is much smaller than normal.
