I'm not inclined to want to get involved in an argument with someone who misattributes or misinterprets things I said.
My first post here says I wouldn't bore people with all the details of a process which took several hours, so it's not reasonable to make certain assumptions or deductions about details I omitted, in particular the assertion that I failed to thank these people for the time they spent on this.
Despite the suggestion above, I am not lying. I was not angry or aggressive or abusive with any of these people, and I did not swear at anyone which would be my assumed definition of the word profanity which was used as a pretext to threaten to end the call.
I merely phoned up to ask what the error code meant. I did not pretend to have a support contract, or use any other form of deception or social engineering, yet the agent insisted on having access to my PC to sort this out.
It's true that I didn't read the beta agreement, as guessed above. I had no obligation to read the beta agreement. Also I had no need to remove the beta version before installation of any other, as I did not have the beta version on here. And I have not implied on here that I did ever use the beta version.
StumpyPumpy, I'll thank you not to make unsupportable accusations. This installation is not corrupt, and contains no hacks or other exploits of WGA, as there is no need to do so.
I've been looking around a bit. In the SoftwareDistribution.old folder there is a log file called ReportingEvents. In this log the remark Windows successfully installed the following update appears about 180 times. Whilst some are merely Windows Defender updates, which I usually leave to gather for a few days, everything else has installed without problem since the first handful of updates shortly after W7 was installed in Oct 2009, to some of Thursday morning, which is hardly symptomatic of a corrupt or unstable or ineligible system.
In addition, this item appears twice near the end of that file:
80073712 AutomaticUpdatesWuApp Failure Content Download Error: Download failed.
The same thing appears in the newer version of the log file in respect of a couple of small downloads the support agent tried. Then they worked, then she twice attempted automatic download of the SP, but cancelled each after 20 minutes.
Then I tried SP1 late on Friday evening and it all worked, without any modifications to the PC, which again suggests no corruption of the system, if something failed 3 or 4 times and then worked. Maybe after all it was just that the server was just busy.
Now I merely have to roll back the other changes that the agent made. All other previous Windows Updates I've done have had no problems with the antivirus desktop component running, or with services such as Adobe Reader, Sun Java and Nokia Music being enabled to autostart. Even Prevx hasn't reacted against Windows Update, though I suppose it's a bit more understandable she wanted to turn that off. Oh, and another thing, why turn off UAC or part of the graphics card?0 -
I'll make just this last reply then leave it
Can you please explain to me what unsupportable accusation I have made? You asked what the meaning of error code 80073712 was, I told you. Would you like me to repeat it for you, as you obviously did not read my previous replies:StumpyPumpy, I'll thank you not to make unsupportable accusations. This installation is not corrupt, and contains no hacks or other exploits of WGA, as there is no need to do so.
Yes, that's right, it is supported by the error code you supplied, but I guess that can't really be the case because you have said your installation is not corrupt, and you know the problem could not possibly have anything to do with you or your machine. It is all down to you wasting your time calling Microsoft. Here's an idea, maybe if we all wish hard enough we can make it all true.80073712 The component store is in an inconsistent state - means your current installation is corrupt. The System Update Readiness Tool is the recommended way of trying to fix this error.
Let me give you the benefit of the doubt, and assume you have no idea what the component store is or its role in windows update, so I'll tell you in very basic terms: the component store is a database used to store and track all the binaries necessary for installing roles, features and the like in Windows. It is part of your Windows installation. Windows Update uses it to know what, where and how to update your machine. When an exception is thrown trying to access the component store it raises a 80073712 error. The installer log you have shows the error, the app (AutomaticUpdatesWuApp - aka Windows Update) and the bubbled up error text. And what does that all mean? It means You have a corrupt installation of Windows, but come on, let's all wish a little harder. I'll tell you what, why don't we both pretend the actual error you got was 80072f8f - that means your system clock is out of sync with the Windows Update server clock. There you go, happy now? Not a corrupt installation at all. It's just those dumb Microsoft people didn't set their clocks properly.
That's it, I'm done. reply what you like, I don't care. Be as rude as you like. Think I'm persecuting you? That's fine, Think I'm misrepresenting you with my direct quotes? That's fine too. You will not get me to change my opinion of you and your attitude and I'm sure the feeling is mutual. There is not a lot to be said to a person who intimates that they thanked someone over the phone then came to a public forum complaining about them wasting their time and advising others not to bother with them.
You know what the funny thing is though? Now that you have found your install logs, it would only have taken me a quick scan through them to tell you exactly what the root cause of your update problem was (down to filename and version number, even byte level if necessary) and give easy to follow suggestions on how to avoid them in the future. But I'm not going to do it. Instead I'll just wish you all the luck you deserve in your future updates and recommend you take frequent backups.
Or better still, buy an iBook, install Linux even, I'm still serious, everyone would be happier.Come on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.0 -
Here's an update to the waffle I posted above
I just ran Windows Update again and it installed SP1 perfectly ok. It hasn't used 5 GB of space, and the overall size afterwards is pretty similar - in fact if I delete the backup files for the SP1 update (but not yet) there would be actually more space.
So I don't know what that error code means. If else anyone gets it, just wait a while and try again, and don't waste 5 hours of your life talking to Microsoft about it and letting them remove or mess up your other installed software
It definately sounds like waffle to me.... I only had 3GB of free space to start with and it used 0.7GB of that (Yes I know... I need a new boot drive bigger than 60GB)
Whenever I phone any corporate I expect to have issues with (local council, Virgin Media, Vodafone (especially Vodafone)) I automatically say that the call is being recorded for my records. You'll be amazed how different a service you get sometimes.Signaller, author, father, carer.0 -
I downloaded SP1 for Windows 7 yesterday and it took about 20 minutes.
All up and running so far.0 -

I've checked my updates and it is there but I have a few 'recommended' updates too. Am I best adding these first?
I never know which ones to leave and which ones to put on my computer (it is set to update important ones automatically).
I've tried to 'google' first but don't recognise any sites which may provide answers.
The updates I have are:
KB2284742
KB2387530
KB2388210
KB2454826
KB2467023
KB2484033
KB2487426
KB2488113
KB982110
Any help would be appreciated, thanks:)0
