Well, I've had some issues with it.
I got a failed installation with an error code which I looked up. Fairly inconclusive opinions on what exactly it is, and one or two people managed to fix it by delving into abstruse details in the Windows folder or somewhere
So I phoned up Microsoft to ask what the error code meant.
First of all the switchboard or reception asked me for some details before putting me through. My product ID wasn't shown as valid, so they couldn't proceed. I asked what that meant, and they refused to comment. I asked if they intended to suggest this was a fake copy, and they rfused to comment on this either. I asked to speak to a supervisor. Not available. I asked to be put through to the technical support, or at least someone who would could explain why my product ID wasn't recognised and hence they were refusing support. At this point I was told if I continued to use profanity the call would be terminated. I hadn't done so. I asked for a manager. Not available. I asked if the call was being recorded. Yes. I asked to be referred to a complaints team and that I wanted the recording listened to to resolve the false accustion of swearing.
I was offered a conference call with someone in technical support, and then transferred to that person. None of the eprsonal details taken so far had been forwarded on handover.
This person talked me into letting her have access to my computer and she would sort it out.
I won't bore you with all of the details, but the process took 3 and a half hours, including several restarts, and she went to install a couple of old updates I didn't want on here, such as the browser choice one and one which has something to do with Genuine Advantage. I stopped it all for the browser choice, so I had to explain that, but it seems the Genuine Advantage is now on here.
In addition, I've been rolled back to IE8 from IE 9 RC, and several third party applications have been completely disabled, including Google search and my anti-virus program. She explained that some protection software prevents changes and this might clash with the update system. She did some more updates, this time finding a System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 which hadn't appeared even 2 hours eralier. I was left with a manual download of the SP1 update that I was supposed to install manually, and a promise she would call back in a couple of hours.
Next problem. There isn't enough spare space to do the update, as it requires 5 GB.
My PC came with Vista on it, and to begin with I installed Windows 7 release candidate on a separate partition. Then I installed w 7 Ultimate on top of that, while I decide whether to get rid of Vista completely or not.
So I went to reduce the size of the Vista partition, then expand the W7 partition. Nope. The first one shrunk, but the other can't be expanded.
So I call again, and someone else gets access, wanders about, concludes I'm right that it can't be expanded, suggests I back up, reformat the whole disk and install Windows 7. Trouble is you can't backup software products only documents, so I'd lose the stuff that Dell gave me free at the beginning. But yes, just about anyone would suggest I should eventually get rid of Vista for Windows 7, but not necessarily in a hurry I reckon.
I find that from the partition manager in Vista I could delete the partition with W7 on it, then presumably I could reinstall it on a larger new partition using the rest of the unallocated space.
That looks like my approach for now, but even so it's a load of effort I didn't necessarily need to make. But I might have to if the other choice is not having the third party programs she disabled.
Anyway, short version instead - anyone know what error code 80073701 means?0 -
Here's an update to the waffle I posted above
I just ran Windows Update again and it installed SP1 perfectly ok. It hasn't used 5 GB of space, and the overall size afterwards is pretty similar - in fact if I delete the backup files for the SP1 update (but not yet) there would be actually more space.
So I don't know what that error code means. If else anyone gets it, just wait a while and try again, and don't waste 5 hours of your life talking to Microsoft about it and letting them remove or mess up your other installed software0 -
OEM 6 & 7 MultiBoots I suspect, no idea what 80073701 is but you have had a right chew mate. Big issue for this thread is that you were legit and it saw your OEM as [ NOTE ] illegit.
As you say I checked my before & after and I also found the overall size after the re-write same same - similarDisclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion.
