Thanks I didn't know whether it was a tactic from them as I couldn't find anything posted to say that other people had this problem.:rotfl:

If anyone is in the same boat re First Direct I thought I'd let you know that I have found out that these charges are unlawfull and therefore can be reclaimed. It's just another tactic to put you off.
If anyone has had the same problem it would be good to hear from you.

I have just had an offer from fd of £647 in f&f settlement towards a claim of £926.50 (not including interest). I was delighted and was going to accept but now seeing so many people getting it all back on here and the charges success board I feel like I would be doing myself out of nearly £300. So think I am going to reject offer and see if I can get it all. I guess I have nothing to lose ...!

  • Anyone had dealings with First Direct in trying to claim thier bank charges back? How are they dealing with claims. I sent off my first letter asking for £3900 plus interest totalling just over £5000 back and have had the standard reply that the charges are lawful etc and was part of my contract with the bank.
Just wondering if my next action should be to continue and send them the sterner letter for full amount and threatening court action or should I 'risk' the alternative and write requesting a lesser amount (I have a figure in mind). Are they 'kinder' to these lesser requests and if so do they tend to go for the lesser amount I claim or do they tend to 'barter' and offer even less? If anyone knows and doesn't mind sharing their info then what are there reactions/replies.
Any help/advice greatly recieved and appreciated.

My advice is to be firm with them and keep on plugging away, they can be very difficult.

Threaten court action and never give up, you will get your money back eventually. It is just a case of hanging in there and never giving up. I was overcharged £780 and ended up getting £650 of it back.

    Good luck with your claim.

Thanks for your advice. I get a feeling from the letter 'tone' from them they ain't going to be a pushover but yes I'm going to continue and try to get my cash from them (saving for a house with the girlfriend so every bit helps)!
May I ask you (or anyone else who's had dealings with them) if they closed your account or not?
    Thanks

No they didn't, but I must admit they are somewhat colder towards me since I started asking for my charges back.

  • Hi guys,

I'm new to this forum. The money saving tips on bank charges attracted me here. Thank you Martin!

I was just wondering if someone could help me with First Direct charges. They have 2 types, one is an "Overdraft Fee" the other is an "Excess Overdraft Fee". I think they say one is for going over firstly, and the other is for making further transactions when having gone over.

Can I claim for both or just the one where they charge me for firstly going over?

    Thanks guys in advance.
