Attempted Burglary

  • My Gran had a safe that was built into the wall...

They smashed the wall around it to pieces, pulled it out and took it with them.

A safe is an obvious target for thieves.

Obviously i can see why you'd get one, but they have there cons as well as pros ;)

My mum had a safe. The burglars ran off with it! Best to get the really strong kind which screws to the ground.

Yes indeed, a safe that isn't bolted to the floor is merely a heavy suitcase.
All of them come with the bolts needed.

It should also be out of sight, the cupboard under the stairs is ideal so you can throw a couple of coats over it.

The average burglar isn't the safe-cracking-ronnie biggs-style-master-criminal, he will be a spotty 19 yr old oik with with baggy jeans and a taste for illegal drugs. His IQ will be slightly lower than that of a breeze block and he will only take what is on show. He will have zero chance of getting into a safe.
  • I've got 2 dogs and feel safe in my home. Much better than a burglar alarm, imo

the best £100- £150 you'll ever spend and will last for the rest of your life.

See, I leave my bag on the bottom of the banister in the hall and our keys are all in the hall too. I do that on purpose.

I'd rather someone broke in, saw and snatched those than have them hunt around the house, then my worst nightmare, have them come upstairs while we're all sleeping.

They could take what the hell they liked so long as they stayed away from my children.

  • I've heard of cases where serious burglars will just kill a dog if there is one at home. I don't think it is a deterrent in parts of Manchester, anyway...

I nearly bought a safe of ebay, bidded then realised it weighed 400kg... luckily I didn't win it (i was going to put it under the stairs bolted to the ground).

We had a breakin some years ago, the chap had done most of our close and loaded stuff into his van. at first he had taken tv's, nice bits of furniture and bigger items. By the time he got to us he was only taking expensive, little items, like cameras and jewelry. He took my eldest childs christening presents, which I found quite hard to forgive.

The police caught him because the poor little chap had been so worn out by all the work he had done that he made himself a nice cup of tea in my kitchen. In a tea pot. And put the tea cosy over the pot. Left finger prints all over my house, but not in any of the others. Muppet.
(I am ashamed to say we had a dog at the time but we had taken him out for the day!)

When I was still living with parents, we had a great big (noisy) Doberman but still got burgled twice. He barked at anything. We think they hit or drugged him. Just glad they didn't do anything worse. Not always the deterrent you think/hope!

  • We had police around the area a few years ago handing out tips to the local residents.
They confirmed that when burglars hear a dog they will move on to the next house for an easir life.
    Was a 40 a day smoker for 20 years.
Decided to give up, and haven't had a fag for 12 years.
    Halfway through losing six stone.

someone across the road from us had her dog's throat slashed just because it was making too much noise at night. And they weren't even breaking in!
