Attempted Burglary

Had an attempted burglary :(

I was home alone and up on the top floor with the music on.

Heard a couple of really loud bangs and throught 'what was that' and turned the music off. Next thing I know I hear a smash and the sound of the door being thrown open.

I tried to get downstairs as soon as I could, but they scarpered. The door was left wide open and there was glass everywhere. They obviously tried to break the door down, but couldn't, so decided to smash one of the glass panels on the door to access the latch.

It's a good thing I was in, as I had my car keys, bank statements, utility bills and savings account book in the living room. It would have been easy pickings (aside from all the other valuables at easy grasp).

I could have kissed goodbye to the deposit on my first place had they been pros.

Anyhow, all is well-ish now, except we need a new door, I need a good night sleep, and a working burglar alarm ...
Deposit for FTB: £81,000 ... and counting

So sorry to hear that. Glad you managed to disturb them. It is such a shame such desperate and horrible people live in the world. Take care.

Glad all is ok (apart from the glass...) This is the reason why I have a large dog. He's as soft as butter, but his bark is loud and deep, and he looks pretty scary too. I don't think that if anyone thought I had something really worth stealing he would put them off as they would find a way round... but he is enough to move them on to the next property. That's unfortunate for the next person they decide to pick on, but unfortunately that's what the police feel is the only way to deal with it! (so I was told by a senior officer)

I didn't realise that would be a benefit of having a dog but ours is the same. I definitely feel safer having him. When I was looking for home insurance last month, one insurer actually asked me if I had a dog!

  • Sorry to hear the news......hopefully your viewing tomorrow will take your mind of it , maybe it's something telling you that it's time to move. Things happen for a reason!.
  • Same happened here 2 weeks ago. My 13 year old son had let himself in from school at 3.45 as usual, walked through kitchen to see someone trying to get in utility window - he rang me at work and I called the police who were here within minutes in force along with dogs, they tracked him so far but too much activity so lost the scent. My son was initially fine till the realisation kicked in of what could have happened... ie the burgular could have been inside the house or we could have been totally wiped out...

I must admit the police have been really good, my son gave a good description and CID brought some photos round.
  • Same thing happened my to my Auntie once, she was living alone her house, heard a noise and came out of her bedroom to see a huge man coming up the top of her stairs!! She ran back in the bedroom, locked the door, opened the window and started screaming and shouting, woke everyone up and he fled, next day she got a dog!
;) Thanks to TS, BM, LR and the others for great help with 'P+I' ;)

Yeah ... at the time, I was OK. But it was only a few hours ago once the police had left that it really hit me.

I was on the second floor, and the rest of the lights were out, so it would have seemed that nobody was in. I usually have my headphones on too, so I wouldn't have heard anything. I was the only person at home.

The thought of them actually rumaging through the house and then realising I was there ... who knows what would have happened.

Had I not been there ... Jesus. I don't even want to think about it.

Police arrived pretty quickly too, but no dogs and not much they could do. The door has been secured and forensics will come down tomorrow. The door clearly needs replacing once they have done their thing.

The most distressing thing is thinking what if it had been my mother that was at home instead. On her own. You just never know where these things could go.

Anyhow, this IS a low crime area, but because it is fairly affluent there are a lot of burglaries. I guess we are just lucky this is the first time it has happened in the 25 years that the family have lived in this home.

I will definitely be looking at burglary levels when checking out prospective properties!

  • Try not to let your mind go in overdrive, however, since our incident I have been extra cautious over security and am suspicious of every male passing by.

    Stay safe
