My sister's house got broken into around 3am just before Christmas while they all slept in their beds (her, other half and three kids). Left the front door wide open after - they think my BIL went down and disturbed them as he was on earlies and his alarm went off around that time.

    It's awful, isn't it.

As hard as it is, try not to let it affect you too much. Sort out that burglar alarm - do I take it you had a box on the front of the house but the alarm wasn't working? Usually they don't take the risk if there's an alarm box outside and target another house.

Hope you managed to get some sleep!

  • While at University i woke in the middle of the night and went downstairs to get a drink from the kitchen. Upon entering the living room (which leads to the kitchen) i saw a kid (i say kid, he must have been 15-16) hanging through the window (the top skinny bit of the window) with a couple of his mates helping him through.

Underneath the window was 2 xbox360's, a TV, dvd player, Nintendo Wii, about 30 games and 30 dvds as well as a selection of other valuables in the room.

Upon seeing me (tired, hair all over the place, in my boxers looking very shocked and !!!!ed off) they pulled the guy back through the window and shot off up the back garden.

I got the door open and chased after them, jumped the wall at the end of the garden, but they where too far ahead by this point and escaped into a nearby estate.

I was incredibly annoyed and confused to have happened to walk in on an attempted burglary and needless to say after that we made sure all windows were fastened properly before going out or going to bed!
  • Am glad i have a dog although the same as a previous poster she is daft as a brush but her bark is intimidating if you can't see her and she hears EVERYTHING thats goes on just outside the house.
Politicians and diapers have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly, and for the same reason.

Those HMO student digs are a burglars dream. Full of goodies payed for by mamma and papa, none of the occupants knowing who's in the place or who's out, strange friends and hangers-on coming and going at all hours, no-one locking doors assuming it's been done or someone else will do it, or not even thinking about it.
The place in such a mess anyway, a 'ransacking' goes un-noticed.
  • Indeed - while everyone is drunk or high the occasional window or door is left open - and there are constantly different people around.

After we actualy had someone half way through the window we gave security much more thought!

The only other time at Uni someone attempted to steal from our dorms - we had a group of local boys appear inside our kitchen (god knows how they got there) and i found one of them looking in peoples rooms. I gave some gentle physical persuasion and they were soon all goen and looking for another place to rob.

I have been extra cautious over security and am suspicious of every male passing by.
Because we are all burglars........for god's sake get a grip.
  • The one good thing about all these stories is that as soon as there is any disturbance the burglars flee at a rate of knots -.,. the last thing they want is to actually engage with anybody. So the best thing is to ensure that you never block their exit... or get a blinkin' large dog :-)

Exactly, most people only consider buying one AFTER they have been burgled. A little pointless then.......

My mum had a safe. The burglars ran off with it! Best to get the really strong kind which screws to the ground.
