i'm currently having a wee thought going through my head just now.... hubby wants to be more involved with our finances but is scared that he messes up ... i have explained that we will do it together till he feels more comfortable etc but he also doesnt really want that as he has recognised alot of his issues (dependancy etc) recently ... so i was thinking of maybe giving him the food budget and take away budget for next month .... most of the takeaways are for him not me ... and most of the unnessecary (sp) spends through out the month are down to him nipping out for something etc ... so i was wondering ... would it maybe help if he was in charge of it all ..... so that he can see what money is going out and on what exactly ... it also isnt such as important thing as ensuring the mortgage is paid but it is ultimatley our biggest excess expenditure ... anyone got any thoughts? i dont have to decide till later on in the month but i am just kicking the idea about just now

You could always try it for a month and see how it works out? Your OH might surprise you and save a bit of money.

I would give it a go, El - but be very hands off - you have to give him the chance to do it properly, but just say to him that if he wants your input you are there for him, and if he wants to hand back the responsibility then that is ok too.

As for the counselling - it is not supposed to be an easy ride, remember! Tough though it is, there is no shortcut.....

    What Hypno said...

If he's not really aware of what's going in and out then I think it would be really good for him to see it all. See how it goes.

thanks everyone for your thoughts on this matter ... much appreciated

well i had a wee chat with hubby to see what he thought of the idea ... he is scared about doing it but he wants to .... he agrees he has to do more and seeing as how he loves to cook it is a natural progression really to be dealing with this all first before he moves onto other things ....

i kinda made it a wee bit harder though ( dont i always) in that i explained seeing as how he is going to take over .. maybe it is time we did it right ... we chuck out so much food every week ( maybe as much as £10-£15 worth) so it's time that stopped ... time to do a meal plan ... time to cook properly etc .... this is something i have tried to do many times before but i have not been able to as although we do the shopping together it is me that has to sort out he money for the shopping and find the extra for whatever and its me that deals with the chucking out and stuff ....

i think it is going to be an interesting month

edited to add: he seems to have decided it starts today ... he is in the kitchen cooking for dinner ...hmmmm

squizz are you a Levellers fan?

and hypno you are totally right about the counselling .... he is getting there he is slowly building himself up from the wreck that he had became ... he literally had a mental breakdown ... this has forced him to look at his whole life and find himself again ... that brings its own issues ... but i am sure it will be worth it all when he is through

his new tablets are much better than his old ones so that is good news atleast

I wouldn't say I was a massive fan but I do like them. Good catchy stuff :D

Hah - tell him being a vegetarian is cheaper! Seriously though, could be a good challenge to see what you can do with all the leftovers instead of chucking things out.

I control all the money for the home outgoings and my wife pays for the day to day stuff like food out of her money. i joined the grocery challenge to ascertain what our actual expenditure was -i included everything that was consumed ie meals out and takeaways and was shocked to learn the amount we were spending--it seemed like a manic food binge was going on when i was accounting it!--we both realised we had to be more Os and since then we have halved our outgoing on food but not stopped living!-we have meals out for ocassions rather than habit etc
    mfw'11 No68- 55k mortgage İO--little to nothing saved! i must do better.

i told him it was cheaper ... i said look mr el being a veggie actually will save you money and help you do this ... to which he replied ... well not if we have to make two different meals ... i cant cook a big pot of mince and tatties for us all now can i ? sigh sigh sigh ... always finding the down side ...

he doesnt want to do meal planning either cause if we go to the shops and he see's something on special then we will have to use that up so that will throw the meal plan out ... he wants to look at what we have every day see what were having and then buy what we need ....

ok it is totally his choice and i am not going to interfere at all ... he has to do this his way ... in the way that makes sense to him and i have to let him learn ....

i think it may be a slightly tense month lol
