Raksha wrote:Can anyone help me? My OH works shifts, 'days' (8-3) evenings (3-10) and 'nights' (10-8) over a 5 week shift pattern, never more than 3 days on each shift, and then 3 or 4 days 'off' (sometimes even 5 days off as they have to work an 'occasional day' to keep their hours per week right, but most of the time he takes a days holiday to avoid doing it)
As as result I find it almost impossible to get into any kind of routine, as I'm either keeping the noise down to avoid waking him, or being encouraged to do things with him as it's the only chance we get for 'grown up time'......
How do other shift widows work?
It's a real juggling act, isn't it!! Couple of ideas for you ...
Break things down into 'noisy' jobs and quiet jobs - those you can't do while he sleeps, but can do when he's awakeYou'll find that if you work on that basis, you'll soon have a routine that you can wiggle and jiggle around his shift patterns.
Days off - well, you both already know which one's they are going to be, sooooo book a day-date together. That way, you have regular time together for grown up time, but still have a sense of routine too.
Next one - very important- delegate!! On his days off, put him to good use!! You'll get through things in half the time = more grown up time
It *is* do-able, it's just not as rigid as many others.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

okay im back...... in full swing... done all the jobs that i had on my list apart from the ironing but the pile was smaller than i imagined it to be so it can wait til tmz. ive even put bm on n done a loaf and made bread buns, ive even made a syrup sponge and flap jacks!!!!!!!!!!!!! im on a roll!does my bum look big in this sig?0

I'm absolutely not on a roll. In fact I feel as if I've been flattened by a steamroller.
Last-minute arrangment, scrambled disorganised start, then longish drive to daughter's, made longer by two lots of roadworks, then lunch with Very Cross 2 and half year old having all her buttons pushed by her 4 year old sister, and having to seem interested in other daughter's husband's IT firm being taken over, earning him an obscene bonus.
Bring back Pantry Blitzing for a rest and light relief!0 -
It has taken me an hour and a half - even with the steam press - but I have done most of the ironing! Hurrah, hurrah, hurrah - no more for a fortnight.'If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need' Marcus Tullius Cicero0

Good to see you back Moggins! :hello:
DS1 is still ill (since Thursday now) so restricted movements today. Quick general clean and DW/WM/TD today. DS2 looking off colour....
Need to have a good scrub at the kitchen splashbacks today - someone appears to have been blending without a lid. I also want to check my storage cupboards after reading the weevils thread last night.....'If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need' Marcus Tullius Cicero0 -
Welcome back Moggins! Do you like our new sparkly thread?
Need to iron shirts before school, then have a looooooooooooong list of jobs for today.

Good morning!
Today is my "bedrooms" day. I have my usual daily routines, but have set aside different days for certain parts of the house. So today, I change the bed linen, dust & vacuum bedrooms (well, DS's room gets a very cursory going over, as it is supposed to be his job!)
And I am also getting a lot of washing out of the way, too. What with 2 beds worth of bedlinen and the fact that I don't do washing on Sunday, there is quite a lot to get done. Also I brought the towels/teatowels/cleaning cloths from church to be washed (sounds more than it actually is!), so they can go in with some of my towels & bedlinen etc.
I got the idea of certain days for certain rooms partly from Flylady, but also partly from on of the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, who wrote the "Little House on the Prairie" series of books about her childhood. I will find the bit I mean and post it on here in a minute or so......0 -
