Can anyone help me? My OH works shifts, 'days' (8-3) evenings (3-10) and 'nights' (10-8) over a 5 week shift pattern, never more than 3 days on each shift, and then 3 or 4 days 'off' (sometimes even 5 days off as they have to work an 'occasional day' to keep their hours per week right, but most of the time he takes a days holiday to avoid doing it)
As as result I find it almost impossible to get into any kind of routine, as I'm either keeping the noise down to avoid waking him, or being encouraged to do things with him as it's the only chance we get for 'grown up time'......
How do other shift widows work? Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -
Hello to the newbies, and thanks Squeaky for the new thread.
I managed to drag myself off the sofa and got the utility, bathroom and most of the kitchen done. DS1 very hot and has just been sick which rather limits my movements now.
Raksha - Not a shift widow myself, but somewhat handicapped by toddlers. I don't have set times to do things I just make sure I use every opportunity. Instead of wasting the first half an hour on here I make myself do certain jobs before I am allowed on, then I limit myself to 15 minutes online. I make sure dishwasher is done, sink is shiny and teh bathroom is swished before bed, and I tidy up the mosnters mess as soon as they go to bed. Not allowed to sit down or go to bed until these tasks are done! Over time this has made a difference and has given me the time, energy and motivation to tackle the long term dirt. Best of luck with setting up a suitable routine.
TNG - your light is still on... I take it you have left the pc running whilst you are away working?'If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need' Marcus Tullius Cicero0 -

Bring on the pantry challenge - mine is tidy thanks for asking - and nearly empty.
Last week at work I had to do a review of internet usage, top two sites - rightmove and MSE. Guilty party - mostly me and one of the directors! Quite embarassing for both me (HR) and our IT chap. TNG horse in the SC?!?!?
raksha my OH works shift - but regular nights (10pm-6am)
till when he gets up i try to be quiet and can't get anything done upstairs; so that is somehow throwing a spanner in my cleanwork
i tend to do as much as possible downstairs (or take work sometimes down in the morning if possible - a mountain of babyclothes to sort through), i also have to entertain 2 toddlers the same time so i agree with hex. i get up do sort of a 'morning routine' (get washed and dressed, make bed, s/s bathroom) - then kitchen (breakfast for everyone, d/w, clean again) - THEN mse
- and a 'before bedtime routine' (put toys away, clean kitchen, sweep floors) - that's how far i come so far
all the other bits and peaces will fall into place ... i am certain!!
oh well, oh is still asleep, dd is asleep again and ds is yawning on the sofa
beef stew is stewing away in the SC
lunch was wolfed down
kitchen is clean
will go and relax my back a bit on the other sofa, might need a book to do thatI have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work0 -
