Thinking about it, I'm sure I read a thing in the paper a few years ago that Tescos made some royal !!!! up with bananas, cant remember the exact story but I think it may have been something to do with extra clubcard points or something, they were giving more points than the value of the bananas or something, some bloke bought the shop out of bananas and was giving them away in the carpark.
At least I think that was the story, it was something like that, maybe the clubcard points added up to more than he actually spent.

    Anybody remember this?
    Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently! ;)

It was Safeway (remember them?) and their ABC loyalty card. You earnt more money back than the Banana's were worth.
Who or what was I before you came in to my life
    I am not sure

  • OK I'm totally lost now, is there a misprice on Banana's?

I have just spent 30 mins catching up on the forum and all I have worked out is that
    - Constantine is Phil "the power" Taylor.

    - I could have made some money out of Safeways a few years ago buying Banana's

    - Kevin Kelly appears to have been cloned into a range of different forum members.

Oh yeah, just to keep in with the Banana thing, when I worked at Sainsbury's I found a whacking great big dead Spider in the Banana's when I opened the box. It went off for analysis and it was said it had been dead for about 4 days. Must have got travel sick. Glad it was not a customer who found it, so keep a look out for them Spider's people
We took on Mr T and we won:D

Shame it had to end, will have to get free stuff from comps now

I remember this - it was definitely Tesco.

Just done a search and here's an article about it from the Telegraph.
IT was a simple mathematical calculation that enabled a physicist to buy 3,000 bananas from his local supermarket, give them all away, and still make a profit of £25.
Phil Calcott, who works at a Government defence establishment, was shopping at Tesco in Worcester when he saw an offer of 3lb of bananas for £1.17. With them came 25 Clubcard points.
"The points can be redeemed for goods worth £1.25," said Mr Calcott. "I did a mental calculation and it seemed you couldn't lose. Basically they were paying shoppers 8p to take away 3lb of bananas."
Mr Calcott, 28, said he had always wanted to be a philanthropist, and bought 942lb for £367.38. Then he set about giving them all away.
"I took a carload at a time and at one stage my living room was stacked from floor to ceiling with almost a third of a ton of bananas," he said. His first stop was Worcester High Street where he managed to give away 150lb by shouting "free bananas" at shoppers.
"Some people were dreadfully suspicious because they couldn't conceive of anybody giving something away for free," he said. "They thought there must be a catch to it."
He also gave them to a local drop-in centre for the homeless, a school in Fernhill Heath and neighbours in his road.
Mr Calcott now has almost 8,000 Tesco Club Card points, netting him a total profit of £25.12. "Giving away things for free has always appealed to me, just to see how people would react," he said. "All I have left are two bunches for my own consumption and that's it."
