MSE News: Halifax to repay £500m to 300,000 mortgage holders

On November 14 2008 HSBC still had a lifetime tracker deal available to those with 60% LTV at 0.99% above base rate subject to a £799 product fee. Base rate was 3.00% at this time but steadily worked its way down to 0.5% by March 2009. How I wish I'd been given the chance to move to this deal......
I said this to the advisor today and she didn't seem to enamoured that I new about that level of information. Thanks to all the competition posters.0 -
I received the same letter regarding a refund to my mortgage after an error on the mortgage cap, I rang the Halifax hotline and asked about the letter, I was told that I would be sent a letter out in December once they had worked out how much they are refunding me. Which is the 1% monthly interest of my mortgage multiplied by the months I was overcharged (35 months) plus 8% interest on that amount. I then asked if it was possible to have a cheque rather than paid off of my mortgage and they said that once you receive the letter you can ask for either which would be paid within 2 weeks of that letter. Hope it comes in time for Christmas :-)

Jimmyowl77 - were you on a product rate or SVR for all that time?
Thanks0 -
5yr fixed rate, don't really understand where the variable bit comes into it but will happily accept any refund they're offering. :beer:0

Jimmyowl77 - I would imagine its similar to mine, the variable bit is probably the interest you are charged on any fees that are added to the mortgage. I.e product fees that you paid to go on a fixed rate0

Thats good news! May I ask if he was in the batch earlier in the year or the more recent group notified in November?0 -
My ex partner and I had a joint Halifax mortgage and I found out he was sent a letter and a cheque and I got nothing. My questions are why didn't Halifax let me know too and how was he able to cash a cheque that should have been in joint names. No excuse from Halifax that they didn't have my address as I took out a new mortgage in my name with them and opened a new current account.
Is this legal does anybody know?
Thank you0 -
