Ani my OH has a contract phone because of work/we don't have a landline etc. It's rather essential to us especially as I'm now in my final weeks of pregnancy (I have a pay as you go, I put £5 a month on it.) He also has an iPhone. Anyway, point of this long rambling post is that his is with 3 and he pays £25 a month. Also a 24 month contract I think. Do you think you could switch over? BTW it's the sim card he's paying £25 a month for as he already has the phone :)

YES Ani! Aaaaaaaand I don't spend £40 on clothes per month anymore! I realised my wardrobe had lots to offer me! I sold loads of stuff too :) hugs xx

    Hi Lucy,

    Great to see you back!

Just one thing I'm a single parent of four I work full time don't get anything apart from child benefit (did have child tax credit but they messed up dispite me informing of DD2 going to uni!) and I live in a housing association property (no partner P!$$ed off to the other side of the world, ignores his children & they only house you for certain reasons, just couldn't fight anymore:(). (Yet to get the new kitchen/bathroom) although I did get a shower put in (at my own expense) and did my own tiling:D. We're not all the same I have a profession, earn a decent wage and would love to own a home one day.

That said I know (through my job) that there are people who regard benefits as a right and have a neighbour who continues to not declare her partner as living with her in order to keep full tax credits!

More importantly though did you ever make it to a bar on your own....................ok I'm blonde, slightly vaccuous, like shoes (oh the memory!)

I can understand your frustration but I can never understand just how some people manage to get these so called 'luxury homes' from the council, on housing benefit etc. I am married with 2 boys -1 is disabled and a wheelchair user. He is 14 and we have been renting privately for 10 years now. Having desperately been clearing some debts due to previous redundancy and then me having to give up a good job to care for my son -we have no family to ask for support either -our situation has been very difficult. We moved to a new area 3 years ago. My husband works and supports us so we manage ok. That said, buying a house is a no go at present -so onto the council -they can't help us at all unless a bungalow comes up to rent, which is not very likely. They will not allow us to have a house because it will have to be adapted and will take several months at least and meanwhile my son will be downstairs with no toilet or bathroom. So, hopeless! We are on the list and keep looking but there's nothing suitable. When I ring and speak to them they are not really helpful or supportive but it's not their fault -I think that with regards to disabled housing it is for the minority and perhaps they are simply not informed sufficiently to deal with all enquiries. But what do I know? I do know that it is certainly the minority who seem to get everything handed to them on a silver platter.

Fell walker something is wrong here regarding the council not offering you a house just because they will have to adapt it. Have you sought help from the cab or a soliceter on behalf of your son.

recently had a large argument with my best friend about benefits.

Me: 22 yo Hard working graduate on an average wage (15k)
Her: 23yo Mum with 2 kids never worked a day in her life

Me paying my way with rent etc (BF has good job and earns over double my wage and pays 2/3rds of everything) and facing up to debt from student days (never had a night in a club in my life - hardly drink, stayed at home with folks..)
Her benefits, rent paid for etc etc saying how good she's been not spending too much money on takeaways this month but dropping in the fact her DH has spent over £200 of tax credits on a tattoo - saying well it's there for life - THAT'S MY MONEY!! (and your's)

What I hate about people like them is they don't see it as a benefit they see it as a right to claim it... They would never give it back and say 'oh we don't really need it this month'

She also suggested that my BF should pay for everything because he earns more than me - I HIT THE ROOF!

She's still my best friend and I love her and her family but it gets my back up something cronic when there are people on here literally struggling to live and them splashing the cash...

oh and another thing I left school in 2005, we all said what we were gonna do (go to college, then uni, get a house, have kids blah blah blah) and then one girls pipes up and says I'm gonna get pregnant and get myself a flat... she's currently living the dream...
Life is too short not to love what you do.

Yes and there are plenty more like her...

I am really annoyed that OP with the disabled son can't be housed yet there are enough funds in the pot for brand new kitchens and bathrooms for perfectly healthy (albeit lazy) people....!

Exactly. There pretty much isn't any justice in the benefit system and it really is a postcode lottery

ps: well done on quitting smoking - the BF did too on Friday and has been amazing - doesn't even seem to be missing them much :T

Just wanted to update, we've been to CAB today and have qualified for legal aid so hopefully we will be sorted before our son arrives. I've not gone too much into the problems we're having because I feel so embarrassed (I shouldn't, but I do) but I'm really glad we have finally had a bit of luck :)

This is such a ridiculous situation, they'd rather you struggle in privately rented than allow you to live in a council/housing association home while alterations are made. Even more unfair is if someone who doesn't work and has such a home and then found they needed disabled access/lift ect. they'd be doing the alterations in a flash. I do hope things improve for you soon
