ah Lucy you have to try it at least! Watch the STC episodes where they get used to being themselves and go to bars/restuarants on their own! You really really do need to do this. Yep take a paper/mag/book, so somewhere with a lovely garden, grab something to eat. I strongly recommmend every single (or partnered) woman does this! Feel the fear and do it anyway! When you are old and in pain, can no longer go out you will want to look back on your life and think "yes, I took life by the horns and tried everything I could!"DF as at 30/12/16

Hi All...big wave. Have been following this thread since it started! I'm single...and don't feel bothered doing things on my own, at first I did but then decided if I sat around waiting would never do anything! lol. I know what you mean about feeling left out, i do sometimes but hold your head high and keep smiling! xx0

I've also done the going to the wine bar alone thing. The first time I went at lunch time and ordered coffee, a sandwich then got my kindle out. Now I can manage a glass of wine without food but I still need the kindle or laptop to give me a reason for being there! Try it Lucy, it's pretty strange at first but you'll get used to it.Whatever0

Completely in agreement with the DIY ladies posting here
You don't want to be sat in your rocking chair 50 years from now thinking 'I wish I'd....'
I've said it before - the saviour for me was weekly dance classes. Someone else mentioned Salsa. So give Salsa a go or try Modern Jive which is what I did / still do. (Nothing to do with Rock & Roll Jive BTW)
From weekly classes, I also started going to the weekend social dances (on my own and then making friends to meet there), I ended up some Fridays/Saturdays driving for 1 hour to go to a dance and knowing people there. There were also weekend dance events and also even holidays.
It did get a bit expensive for me, £7 for a class, £8-£12 for a weekend dance. Plus drinks - most people just drink water. But it was BRILLIANT. I had the time of my life!
I think the poster that mentioned Salsa said her class night was a bit cheaper. (I tried one class a few times but found it difficult to mingle - sometimes you have to try different places)
I started going on my own - took a lot of courage at first - but have never looked back. Some venues - people would come and talk to me and other venues - I would have to make more of an effort. But after a couple of months you know people
If you're interested in Modern Jive, PM me your nearest town and I'll send you details of your nearest class.0 -
OMG Bluebag, I think I would rather die...! I just can't. As I said I am the most outgoing person out there, not in the least bit shy, very outspoken but I can't walk into a bar by myself, I won't even go in by myself to meet someone, they have to meet me outside! Crazy hey but it's just the way I am.
I travel away on business at times, and there have been a few instances where I was away in foreign countries on my own for the first time. I've been with OH for nearly 12yrs so being anywhere so far away on my own seemed strange, however, short of staying in my hotel room for the entire time I wasn't working, I took a deep breath and headed out on my own. Dinner in the hotel bistro, a few drinks in the hotel bar, a day shopping with lunch (it was the weekend, I wasn't shopping in work hours!) etc. Although I was initally nervous, no one batted an eyelid, there were plenty of other people on their own and I was more than happy just for a bit of time to sit and read (took my book/kindle) without having to think about anyone or anything else.Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

Ladies, namely CaledonianPrincess, Kerri, CurlyGirl, DMS, Everhopeful, Schoolrunmum, and anyone else that is thinking the same...
Have you not been in a situation where uninvited men invade your space thinking that because you are on your own you need some company? That's what has happened to me whilst left at a bar for a few mins in the past...
This is what I worry about... appearing desperate and a good hunt for lonely fat blokey at the bar sipping at his pint.....
Great idea to take laptop/kindle/book... but what is the point of sitting yourself in a bar when you could be at home on sofa with laptop? What's the difference apart from being chatted up by lonely fat blokey OR envying the group of people having a laugh sat next to you...?

CurlyGirl, I already take part in fitness classes etc and am very busy in the week and I have met some really nice people but they are just nice to train with and work out with, not really my type of people to dine with or anything...
It is the weekends that I struggle with the most and this will become easier as I get used to being single. I need to be able to enjoy the warmer weather on my own as per the advice given...
I envy those single ladies that can go on holiday by themselves... I think I would bore myself stupid holidaying by myself... there is only so much of me I can handle... I need some strong arms around me and some gorgeous eyes to stare into.....:rotfl:Debt Bust LBM 01/01/2013 - [STRIKE]£11,115.28[/STRIKE] £10,593.81

Slightly melodramatic there but a great thread none the less, however you should be championing all single people to go out to bars on their own not just one gender
I love going to a pub on my own with a book and getting a pint. The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!
