I'm an Asda delivery driver and recently had the pleasure of telling a customer that their large bag of Barkers Complete Dog Meal had been substituted with....................GO CAT!! There's a clue in the name but somehow the picker seemed to have missed it. Luckily the guy thought it was so funny he didn't get annoyed even though he said he would have to go out and buy a replacement.

However I always reccomend customers to tick the substitution box with an ASDA order. You won't lose out as Asda do not charge extra for higher priced subs and if they send something you don't want just tell the driver and we take it back and refund you the money without hassle at all. It's all part of the deal and really isn't a problem.

I also point out that by ticking NO substitutions you could make life awkward for yourself. For example, if you order a multipack of Baked Beans (4 x 440g) and we don't have any you will be sent 4 individual tins for the same price. If you'd ticked NO to subs you would end up with nothing as the computer won't allow the picker to over-ride your decision. Same with milk, if a 4 pint bottle is unavailable you'll get 2 x 2pint bottles but NO to subs and you get no milk at all!

You'll never come off worse with substitutions and you may end up liking something you would never have thought of buying.

One thing that really annoys me with Sainsburys is that if they have run out of a product, they substitute it with a product and charge you the full price. Also if you pick a meal deal such as the 4 curries and 2 sides for £10, they pick something as a substitute that isn't part of the deal and charge you £18-20.

My friend once ordered some deodorant which was on BOGOF and selected two different 'colours'. One of them, there was no stock left and was substituted with a different 'colour' which wasn't part of the offer. It would have been much better if they chose 2 of the same 'colour'
  • Tesco price match now and so if something is substituted you still pay the offer price. This doesn't apply to meal deals though. I had a meal deal recently where the potatoes had been subbed for different ones which meant the offer didn't work. The driver refunded part of the order to give me the offer price. If he hadn't it would all have gone back. I am not paying twice the price for something because they can't supply all the items in the deal.
  • Did a pick today. Customer had requested value napkins. Out of stock. Computer says...............cocktail sticks. ( I gave them the next brand up napkins) xx

Mine the other day was Sainsburys - ordered ground cinnamon, small pack, got... cinnamon sticks. Not bad (apart from not being able to grind them myself and thus likely to be a wee bit on the crunchy side) until you find out that there were two other brands/sizes of ground cinnamon available...
