Sorry about the house kidkat. Better luck with the next one.
bertiebots and fedupfreda congrats on the job news.
beccah thanks for the pearl barley recipie. I usually just add a hand full to soups, stews or casseroles so I am looking forward to trying this.
Made a lentil dhal with rice for tea tonight. Sent OH to the newly discovered thai shop for turmeric. He came home with 100g of fresh turmeric for 70p with advice from shopkeeper on how to grate it and that it can be frozen. Beats paying £1.50 odd for a 50gram jar from the supermarket. It tasted good to, looked like mini ginger roots. OH commented that for a meat free curry it was very tasty and filling.
I am on leave for the rest of the week . As a once in a blue moon treat I am going to meet OH for lunch in a small cafe on the road he works on. Will take the opportunity to visit this shop myself, have a feeling I could be easily tempted to spend a fortune on herbs and spices etc. Will have to make an effort to rein myself in.
nelski I'm in for a damson G&TI am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order.

Well I think it's a lot fairer than the idea of a levy on everyone. Why should someone who doesn't want to sell their own house because they want to leave it to their children be entitled to 10% of my house?
Well, those who didn't buy their own properties, for whatever reason don't mind there being a levy on everyone for their care in old age. It's part of the welfare state. The two tier welfare state.0 -

Wish the recipe were mine, but its the work of Greying Pilgrim.....planning to give it a whirl tomorrow.Sanity is the playground of the unimaginative!0 -
Couldn't agree more gillst - it is a very annoying practice of theirs, and makes it impossible to budget correctly when placing an order. Over the last few months, I've handed a few things back to the driver, that I particularly ordered because they had been on offer or rolled back, only to find they were full price when delivered.
I know they state that this will be the case when you check out, but it's still annoying, and it still gives them licence to alter their prices as an when they feel like it. It's far from satisfactory.
First thing I do when they hand me the paperwork, is check the final price to see if it's what I'm expecting it to be.
Sorry to hear about the house kidkat Hope you have better luck with the next one hun
Congratulations bertiebots and fedupfreda on the job news. It's good to have some positive new amongst the doom n gloom
beccah - or anyone else - what is the consistency of Pearl Barley once cooked? I like the idea of it, just never got around to trying it. I was thinking it might be like arborio and basmati rice, and I find them a bit "gloopy" - makes me feel a bit _pale_ Is it similar at all?Aug11 £193.29/£240

Sorry to hear about the house Kidcat. A similar thing happened to my sister a few years ago. Several weeks later she got a call from the agents asking if she was still interested. The person who put in the highest bid hadn't been able to raise the necessary funds and my sister ended up getting the house for a bit less than her sealed bid was for. So may be worth letting the agent know you would still be interested if the current deal should go pear-shaped.
Supermarket shopping day for me today:(
I managed to come in at £22.46 but had to compromise on some of the things I bought. A can of mixed chilli beans used to cost about 75p, today they were £1.05. Instead I bought a carton of soya beans, and will mix with some kidney beans that I have in the freezer.
Also tripped earlier on and dropped the tray I was carrying, resulting in a smashed glass and bowl. The glass was only a cheapie one, but the bowl was a nice one and is unfortunatley a design which is now discontinued. I'll have to look out for a replacement on eBay I suppose.0 -
For those from the "other" side, now, on top of having bits removed, I have gone down with flu, tonsilitis type thing on top of everything else!!! Thoroughly fed up now but still have no choice but to go back to work. Test results for the white cell stuff should be in tomorrow. Hopefully the "bits" results will be in. No news is good news in my eyes!
Today, one of my friends came over to do a few jobs for me whilst I laid on the couch feeling sorry for myself. I don't have a great deal of room in my cottage but now I have another shelf in the kitchen (which I can hang stuff from) and he put a wooden blind up in the bathroom instead of doors to cover the immersion tank(doors would have been more expensive) but the biggie is that I found a flour bin!!! A pottery one which has been glazed. It stands about 2 ft tall so whilst not quite as big as I hoped, it will certainly do. I just need to get an air tight seal for it. I was thinking along the lines of a draught excluder type thing. I have been searching for this for about 7 years so am really chuffed!!! As I make all my own bread this will be fab and looks just perfect in the kitchen. It sits nicely next to the broomstick!!!He asked me what was the point of the broomstick. Men, they can just be so dense sometimes...given the price of fuel it will soon be my only form of transport!!!:rotfl::rotfl:

(((hugs)))redlady_1. My sister used to get a lot of tonsillitis, often after/ during stressful times. Hope you manage work ok. Hoping that all results come back fine. Hoping also that you got some sleep as it was late when you posted
- you need some sleep if you're going in to work!
Up early here. One of those nights when sleep evaded and brain was whirring like mad.
Going through to Glasgow to see DS on Thurs. Am trying to think what to bring along for him in a goodie bag as he is a bit skint. Thinking toilet roll(!!), teabags, coffee, wraps, cheese, cold meat, maybe some tins - tuna, mixed beans, shower gel. Just want a wee carrier bag to take on train. DD is coming too -she hasn't seen DS's flat yet - and we're going for a late lunch. Anyone have any other thoughts on what i can bring a 24 yr old? Oh he'd like cigs and beer no doubt! Naughty though
Take care all

If you`re not keen on arborio and basmati you may want to give the pearl barley a miss...I`m the same, and find it overly gloopyMakes me think of eating baby food for some reason and that makes me feel queasy.

Bad luck re the illness.:( Guessing that the "having to go back to work" anyway is down to sick pay restrictions?:( Hope you feel better soon.
Now...maybes...you could make a bit of income from renting out that broomstick for transport purposes then?:rotfl:. I read something recently where a person was pointing out that it takes a weeks dole money (ie £65.30) to fill up a car tank with petrol now and thought "That certainly shows up how low dole money is. Anyone who HAS to have a car goes and fills up the tank and then has no money at all left for food/bills/life - crikey!"
Note to self - "Must remember to buy local newspaper again today - to keep up on the promised busfare rises and bus route cuts:( - and the local Council cuts and the County Council cuts....." and, just for a bit of light relief, there's the "Spot the halfway reasonable job" advert "game" on the day a week that jobs get advertised (jobs! what jobs?). I'm viewing those adverts with a new eye now - having recently read a poster on the Jobs Board commenting that her husband has taken on one of those carer jobs that involve driving from one client to another and I now wonder whether those jobs pay enough to cover mileage and the time spent commuting from client to client (I suspect they don't - from what she said). So - theres cleaning jobs (NMW and antisocial hours), carer jobs (probably work out at less than NMW by the time one takes into unpaid "commuting time" AND they expect YOU to provide the car the agency needs for the job!), salespeople jobs (quite probably with those weasel words "on target earnings" mentioned) and very little else..I certainly can see that I'd never get a job again if I got made redundant.0
