  • Hippeechiq thanks for the query regarding the Pearl Barley. The advantage of cooking the Pearl Barley separately (ok, so it can add to the washing up, but in theory I don't see why you couldn't do it in advance and chill/freeze until you want it), is that you get it to the tender stage without putting alot of the starchiness into the dish. You may use some or none of the reserved cooking liquid from the PB in the final dish.

I accept the observation regarding arborio rice, but the release of starch is possibly part of the dish in a risotto?? I don't stir the PB too much once it is cooking in the water - releasing it's starch is not the point, I just want it to cook (but stir v occasionally to check it hasn't boiled dry or stuck to the bottom of the pan). In a risotto, the rice is in the dish almost from the start, in this dish you are putting together precooked components to finish cooking them together.

In this version, the grains remain much more 'separate', you've pre-cooked them so they are nice and tender (crunchy PB - not nice!), and then by cooking them with the tomato spice mix, the PB absorbs some of the flavour and loses its..... 'cereal' erm or 'flour' flavour.

I make the dish (different flavourings) using mushrooms. And there the advantage is that the PB cooks and when added to the mushroom mix, it just absorbs the flavour, it doesn't turn into a watery mess.

So, the consistency of the final dish should be 'moist', each PB grain will be sort of separate but 'bulked up' from it's original state - you are not aiming to make it into porrige and each grain will be coated in the tomatoey 'liquor'.

'Risotto' make with PB is a different dish to that made with rice, but I absolutely accept it will not be to everyone's taste. A small advantage is that you could make a small test batch, if you really didn't like it, with PB about 39p a 500g bag, you have not broken the bank - but I don't like food waste, so I hope anyone that tries it at least likes it enough to eat it - even if they decide never to make it again :)

Beccah I am so nervous for you trying this dish now!

Sorry for the long post and thanks for reading:A

Yes it is ceridwen. My employer has decided that 3 weeks off sick constitutes long term and has put me on SSP after 2. That will not cover even half of my mortgage, let alone anything else. I did point out I had just had an op but he wasnt interested. I went to the quack last week when I found out and just said "you have to get me back to work in a week". Needless to say the dr was not impressed as I am still being packed and am not meant to be driving etc.

WMF - oh dear! I have been caught!! :D My excuse was I was in bed at 8pm last night, got up at 12.30 and went back again at about 1.30 until now. Still feel rough so after I have been to the dr I may go back again!! In relation to your son, you could add pizza, kebab and a young fillie to the beer and fags! :rotfl: My mum always buys me a box of washing powder. I dont know whether she is trying to tell me something but I now have two sat under the stairs!!!

are you here gal? Whats happening about Idiot Boy? Any further developments?

(insert - for those who dont know - Idiot Boy is the neighbour from hell who lives directly above GQ).
  • Has anyone used ocado? I had an e mail saying that they were now delivering in our area and I have no idea what they are

I made a temporary wedge from 2 bedspeads yesterday and put it under my mattress so the head end was higher and I was lying on a proper slope. I get reflux at night and I know this is what wakes me and gives me a night time sore throat. I slept all through the night. I already have low bricks under the bedhead but the recommended height is 5", which I tried and it worked. Beats taking medicines when a simple postural fix might do. The slope was a bit extreme but I may invest in a proper undermattress wedge. This goes with the usual fixes ie no food after 6.30, no fizzy drinks etc Very os and cheap compared to buying over the counter meds. I don`t take meds if I can help it and take nothing just going by self help like neti pot when I get a cold

Ah yes - remembers now...(you'll have to excuse me...I've only just started on my first cup of wake-up coffee of the day...:o). You are the person who unexpectedly found yourself told you'd cut a HUGE cut in income to SSP for being off sick - and I recommended a friendly society that you might like to use in case of future such incidents.

    Goes off...kicks self..."Wake UP ceridwen":o

Hi trazy. I do not tend to follow recipies in my slow cooker I just throw some meat and lots of veg into the slow cooker with some stock. I also add things like pearl barley, porridge oats and lentils to bulk it out. I am sure that you will gets lots of yummy ideas fron the folks on here today.

As I am now on leave :jI will keep nipping in and out today to keep up rather than try to catch up in the evening.

Have just checked the weather and I should be able to put the sheets I have just washed on the line to dry. I am planning to do the ironing in front od a good film this afternoon as the kids are out for the day with their gran.
I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order :D.

A lot of OS'ers swear by a Remoska as well for cooking a variety of things in.

A name that comes to mind here is Hard Up Hester - I know she loves her Remoska.

Hopefully a Remoska owner will come along soon and can fill you in on what Remoskas are able to do.
