1kg is 1.25litres, so the 1.5l jars would be ideal HC - no, scratch that, that's fine for sugar but flour is about a pound to a litre, so open bags will be fine in the big jars. Sorry :o

I will more than likely stay put, I am just having a wobble about money. :o Besides, I am starting an OU course this year, and need something low stress to feed us whilst I complete that.

Wooo just found this brilliant page, which converts your food item from weight to volume, how cool is this? That's going right into my favourites!

Thanks. No apology necessary - you know more about it than me ;)
    Edited to add:
Oh, I'd need a 2.381L jar then for a kilo of flour - that's a big jar. Think I'll just buy a couple of the biggest most reasonably priced jars I can find.

Re your job - I suppose the bottom line is, whether or not you could manage if you changed jobs and then lost that job?

That's the problem, probably not - OH is in construction, and if the economy gets any worse, his work will dry up long before mine.

Even though he earns four times as much as me, I am the bread winner, which is pretty :( I think my only choice is no choice - unless my employers suddenly offer homeworking, then all my problems would be solved! I would even work more hours quite happily :)

Im sure I could live without my husband :eek: but not my girls....:D:D......

You know what its like you start off with a few , but gradually they increase, they are all good layers........people always want fresh free range eggs......

    :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I know what you mean. As it was a nice day out today, we took a drive out to a local breeds place - and saw some Orpingtons (not buff - they were grey - or silver - can't remember :o) and I fell in love :o Big birds - make my ISA browns look like bantams :D

Thankfully they were a breeding pair and not for sale. Somehow I don't think the neighbours would be impressed with us if we got a cockerel :o But if I had the land .......... :o
SMILE....they will wonder what you are up to...........;)

Hippee, I got a freezer on Gumtree, under worktop one, and its full of flour. I wrap it in bin liners then stash it in the freezer. .

Yes, I thought I'd remembered reading that OH's job was in construction. My ex H used to be in the building trade, and as you say, it's great when the work is there, it's just that you can't guarantee it, and in an instant, life can go from being very peachy to bl00dy hard!

With the economic climate being what it is, as tough as it might be, I think you may have answered your own question Jackie

That's a great idea Mardatha but I've already got two freezers, a fridge/freezer and an upright one (standard fridge size) - but even so, I never seem to have any free space :o. Maybe, if I made sure I always had space for at least one bag then, as and when I buy flour, I can freeze it, kill off any mites or eggs that may be in the flour and then store it in plastic crates and hope for the best

A post from a blog I sometimes follow - and, though its an American slant, peeps might pick up a few ideas:

    http://sharonastyk.com/2011/03/06/newbie-food-storage-on-the-cheap

Thanks for this - have added it to my "to read" list as it looks interesting.

I'm running out of space in my current layout, so may have to rejig under the bed as I live in a suburban shoebox! I have about 10kg of sugar, a few kilos of flour, lots of cereal and a few other bits.

My dad offered to buy me a tumble dryer this afternoon when he found out I didn't have one, and couldn't get his head around the fact that I didn't have one through choice! :rotfl:
