They probably check the total weight of a batch but that is not what the individual consumer is entitled to rely on

I believe each one should be weighed individually - where I used to work this was done on the packing line, and then each one was checked to make sure no metal had got in by mistake.

This is where I got the info I posted earlier http://www.nmo.bis.gov.uk/Docs/Latest%20News/PGR%20guidance%2013%20august%202007.pdf

Let us know what Dairy Crest say. I am trying to resist the urge to start weighing everything in my cupboards!

And I thought I had probs, bet you're really cheesed off tho:(:(
    :rotfl:

So now the question is: will they stop being slightly heavier than they say as well?

lol, I'm going to have to join this thread as I can see it getting quite hilarious. I've wanted to get some digital scales for postage for a while - maybe I can justify it now I want to weigh my shopping.

Don't some weights have an "e" after them to indicate that the weight is approximate and may be slightly over or under? Is this the case for the Catherdral City Cheese?

i was under that impression too, i have been buying bacon from heron that says average 6 slices, i always have either 5 or 7

not sure that the same rules apply for when it states an average ammount though

There is some tolerance of the weight but I forget how much it is.

I used to work in a food production lab and samples were collected from production line once an hour. The scales had to be checked with weights before we used them, and they were calibrated regularly. Some things were bang on weight, but others were slightly over or slightly under but as long as it was within tolerance we didn't have to tell them to adjust the machines.

It's very hard to get every product bang on the exact weight it should be.
Here I go again on my own....

Thanks, PP...but actually, I'm getting fewer replies since it was moved from O/S to Consumer Rights!...could you move it back please??

At the risk of opening up a debate. How accurate are your scales? The best (non calibrated) domestic scales are accurate to a few percent,so it's conceivable the cheese is near the lower limit of acceptable or even that it's lighter than you realise.
