my cheese is underweight!

Hi everyone...just wanted some advice.
I bought a 400g block of Cathedral cheese from Tesco tonight. When i got it home, for some reason, I decided to weigh it (never thought to do this before).
My scales tell me it's only 380g...checked on another scale and this reads the same. I know 20g underweight isn't much, but with the tricks the food producers get up to these days, I'm a bit peeved.
What should I do...go back to tesco and complain??? go to trading standards???
thanks

LOL, I think its quite funny you weighed it, but maybe its something we should all start doing more often...it would be interesting to find out if certain suppliers had a tendency one ''weigh'' or another

yeah..I know!! I'm not usually so fussy....I think the reason i weighed it was because i actually bought 2 identical packs, but when I unpacked my shopping, one felt a bit thinner!0 -

I would take it back to Tescos and complain. Get them to weigh it or take a photo of yours. Cheeky Cathedral - they are getting away with it, write to them too!!
Good Luck

I would be very upset over that, I love cheese! I used to work in food production, although I left about 9 years ago, I seem to remember that when we packed food, the scales on the production line would let things through which were over or under the package weight by a certain value. I think this was 2.5% but my memory is failing so it could be wrong, or could have changed since. Generally I think most things don't weigh exactly what it says on the packet as this would be much too hard for companies to do so they are allowed a certain amount of variation.
I have just looked it up (sad I know) and apparently for packages of 300 - 500g the allowable difference is 3%. I would probably complain to Cathedral City personally.0 -
Lol at you weighing it. :rotfl:
If it were me then I'd complain to whoever makes Cathedral. If it clearly states that the cheese itself is 400g, then it should weigh that. It may have just been a mistake, but I'd still point it out.
I've done my fair share of complaining this past 2 weeks. Found a hair stuck in a frozen item so received vouchers. Am still waiting to hear from a well-known chocolate company regarding some extensivley damaged chocolate I got in a multipack.
I'm not usually one for complaining (honest), just believe you should get what you pay for.

THANK YOU!
So 3% of 400g is 12g...but my scales say 20g out, so thats not in the allowable margin. Problem for me is, I can't guarantee that my home scales are precise.
But maybe i'll email Cathedral City anyway and see what they say.0 -
I always weigh iceberg lettuce they vary a lot - and they all weigh less than they did 10 years ago,no so solid which must be due to the growing method. I also weigh pre-packed tomatoes, mushrooms, etc. It's surprising how much they vary
I'd never thought to weigh cheese
aims for 2014 - grow more fruit and veg, declutter0 -
weigh the other one too to see if they are different - if they are both under i'd suspect the scales...but if one is 400 and the other not then take it back to tesco and write to complain - there are very serious rules about weights and measuresPeople seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

ok...have now weighed the other...that one comes to 410g.0 -
There MUST be a Department of Weights & Measures (at least there is in the US when I lived there) & if you complain to them, they should start an investigation. I'd def write a letter to Cathedral w. a digital pic of the scales with the cheese on it & the bag w. weight on it showing & send them an email. Find out the equivilant of the above organization here (there MUST be one) & let them know that you're prepared to escilate things further & get (uk version of dept of weights & measures involved) should they fail to respond in a timely manner, etc etc...That's what I'd do they can't just get away with it! Good luck & well done for being a consciencious consumer!0
