The Santander £30 minimum withdrawal

Depositing chqs today in my local branch the following conversation took place -

"Would you like anything else sir?"

"Yes - £10 withdrawal please"

"I'm sorry sir - minimum over the counter is now over £30. There's a cash machine outside."

"OK - give me £31 please"

"Certainly - there you go. Anything else sir?"

"Yes, can you deposit £21 into my account please?"

Quicker to have given me the £10 then huh?

What is the point of this I wonder. Next thing you know they'll not be handling money at all. And I wonder what you would do if you wanted the last £5 from your account?

You could use the local post office and withdraw down to the last penny.

Plus most bank machines RBS/NATWEST/HSBC & LLOYDS machines now dispense £5.00 notes.

I do totally see your point though ;-)

My local HSBC was not offering ANY counter service last time I went in. Seemed to have enough spare staff to hover around telling people to use the magic deposit-losing machines though ...

Yeah, my local HSBC have binned the counter service, too. It's been gone since they relocated a couple of years ago actually.

It's going to be fun going in there with my change when the jar fills up! Got nearly £100 in there so far

There are only a few Santander accounts that can be accessed via the Post Office. The list is here

It's to allow the staff to do more sales calls and to cut queue times. They want people to use cash machines and the internet. I agree with what you are saying but could you not have used the cash machine for such a small withdrawal?

It wouldn't be so bad if we could actually process faster payments on Santander's internet banking site, instead of having to call them and go through their ten minute security process.

And I have yet to come accross an RBS/Natwest/Llloyds machine that pays out £5 notes, and I live in central london; perhaps they think people in london don't need/use £5 notes?

In Exeter the right hand HSBC cashpoint by Boots gives out £5 notes. (Or is it the left had one? It's one of the two). Lovely crisp ones fresh off the press, too.

The right hand one out the back of Lloyds TSB near centra library used to, too. Haven't checked recently to verify whether it still does

I remember the last cash machines in my area to give £5 notes was 15 years ago - I know this because I was at college at the time, so withdrawing small amounts was kind of the way to go - the machines? they were Midland's.

I haven't seen any in the Bournemouth area dishing out £5 recently - in fact there seems to me more of a trend to "running out" of £10's so they only dish Nx£20 .

No RBS machines dispense £5 notes in England as far as I know.
