Last year the Other Half said she wanted a tulpenvaas - a Dutch flower vase (usually blue and white Delftware) which holds five blooms, and was designed originally to display prize tulips. So I got one - well, she works and I'm now retired - and I feel it my duty to keep it topped up. This means five tulips a week January to May and five roses/carnations/dahlias at other times of the year. I visit all the supermarkets (except Aldi), and I've found Lidl the cheapest, with satisfactory quality and a good range. A weekly display comes to between £100 and £120 a year, and leaves two or three blooms to put on her desk or somewhere.

  • I buy fresh flowers for my little boy's grave, I can't bear the thought of him having no flowers. I spend roughly £6 a week. I'm starting to worry that come June when my finances drop dramatically that I won't be able to afford them for him, there's no way I'm going to stop, it's the only thing I can do for him now 💔

Start now gathering some pots and planting different flowing bulbs that come out different times of years

Or perhaps look at getting a small flowering rose bush?

They may not be to your taste but artificial flowers can look really nice, esp if you are artistic and can arrange them.

A friend of mine goes into Our tesco on Tuesday as that seems to be the day they get new stock in and reduce the old

I nearly put my hand in my pocket to buy daffodils yesterday but didn't

I'm spring cleaning this week so will get them next weekend to welcome in the spring and try to brighten up the dullness that this weather is giving us

Buying flowers does not make you a bad moneysavingexpert! We all need those small little luxuries, whether it is flowers, magazines on nice choccies, to make life a little bit special. I buy flowers every now and then and love them. I'm looking at a gorgeous bunch of multi coloured tulips at the moment and I get pleasure from looking at them. By all means save on fuel, shopping, insurance etc but we all need those little luxuries.

If you can afford it and they make you happy - buy flowers. Cheaper than a glass of wine in a pub and the effect lasts longer!

I don't buy fresh flowers at all, but I wondered why someone had dug out a thread that is six years old. Strange.

Apologies, I came across this thread when searching the forum as a newly budding OSer (if you'll pardon the pun!) to see if others shared my weakness for fresh flowers and if thrifters was justifiable or a cardinal sin!
