OAP drivers

If OAP drivers were so bad they'd get priced out the market with insurance. The proof is in the pudding so to speak. There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.0

When we get a thread about OAP drivers and people criticise them it always makes me smile because one day hopefully they will be OAP's and I wonder whether they will be happy to stop driving at 70 and get a bus.0 -
I've been stuck behind an OAP driver once too often. They have to be amongst the worst drivers on the road.
In all honesty I think after a certain age people should have to re sit the driving test. I think it's a fact older people have slower reaction times. They are a danger to themselves and others.
Slow indecisive drivers can be very iritating @ whatever age. They may have better reaction times, nevertheless it is another fact that most deaths on the road are young inexperienced drivers.
People of a certain age are required to resit their test.

i agree with the op, come 70, get the bus.
And raise the minimum driving age to 250 -
Why should I get the bus, I'm having far too much fun in the Golf. You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I’ll tickle your catastrophe (Henry IV part 2)0

i'll admit a lot of young drivers are inexperienced and cause a disproportionate amount of accidents. but at least over time they become better drivers. while after a certain age a driver's skill starts to go down sharply.
but perhaps raising the driving age to 18 would be an idea. i know when i was driving at 17 i had a few near misses.0 -

Depends on the driver, if you have lead a sedentary life, over eaten , not kept your mind alert and become a right couch potato some people are past it by the time they are 65. Others are as bright as a button and hold their faculties till they are well into their 80,s . Driving gives me no trouble at all and I DO NOT interfere or hold up others. I regularly check my eyesight , I can read a number plate without glasses or other aids at 45m the requirement is 20m .
If you want to keep hold of your abilities just look after yourself ,be sensible and keep your mind alert. You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I’ll tickle your catastrophe (Henry IV part 2)0 -

They may deteriorate slightly but they do not go down sharply and this is more than compensated for by experience, for instance how often do you see an older driver tailgating someone, hardly ever because they know from experience that reaction times are slower and also the number of accidents it can cause especially on fast dual carriageways or motorways.
As an older driver that used to be an instructor, driving instructor trainer including skid pan and could pass a driving test tomorrow without any instruction I would put my skills against yours anytime.0 -

i really don't think starting "i'm a better driver than you" argument addresses the main point being made in this thread. the point being made is that there do seem do be a disproportionate amount of bad OAP drivers. of course there will be some very good older drivers. however a lot of oap drivers just shouldn't be on the road.
there are 3000 road deaths a year in the UK. if compulsory retesting reduced this figure i think it should be considered.0
