if compulsory retesting reduced this figure i think it should be considered.

Actually I totally agree with that, when I was in the industry we always advocated that everyone should be re-tested every 10 or 15 years, of course the argument was that it was just instructors trying to make work for themselves and it was unworkable due to the extra time, number of examiners available and work involved by the DSA to conduct re-tests.

The thing to note in the above official survey is that in the 3 year male age range 16-19 years the group attrition was 36% of the total
In the male group 75-99 years (25 year span) it was 5% of the total fatalities

that's an interesting table. however it's of limited use as it doesn't mention the deaths per miles driven. you'd expect the 30-59 age group to have a lot of fatalities becasue they are likely to drive the most. i'd imagine a lot of pensioners only drive a couple of thousand miles year.

there are 3000 road deaths a year in the UK.

According to the IAM it is young drivers that cause more deaths on the road than OAP's, while those over eighty are more vulnerable due to fragility rather than causing accidents.

The table is interesting but it doesnt actually tell you who was responsible for the deaths !

Ok , it confirms that most deaths are in the younger age group but how do we know that the accident was caused by the people who died in the accident ?
The loopy one has gone :j

but without comparing the numbers of the different aged drivers the table is not that helpful. 75-99 year olds make up 9% of male deaths. yet i'd imagine they drive a lot less than 9% of miles driven. so the table supports the case that OAPs are (on average) worse drivers?

No , because as I mentioned they are a 25 year span group !! all other groups are much smaller, half or less, but accounted for many more accidents.

I think we all pick up bad habits driving, but what irrates my Hubby & me is People who can't drive at night. For example driving down middle of Road or virtually stopping when a car comes in the other direction. Another is driving with front fog lights on in good visability and failure to turn off high beam.

i'd imagine that brand new drivers are the worst of all, but with experience they get better and after a certain age they become worse drivers.

but the thing is with the teenage drivers they get better with time, but the older drivers get worse.

would you be happy being flown in a plane with a couple of OAPs as pilots? why does the RAF retire pilots at a relatively young age?
