About 6/7 years ago I was sitting in my friends house one day when we heard something beeping faintly. After sitting for a few mins wondering what it was we decided it was the fire alarm needing it's battery changed.
So up the ladder I went, unscrewed it, replaced the battery and was just screwing it back together when we heard the beep again! Being so close to the fire alarm I obviously realised it wasn't coming from there and we were a bit confused.
So we stood out in the hallway waiting to hear it again. A minute or so later it went off again and sounded like it was coming from the kitchen so we went in the there and STILL couldn't figure out where it was coming from.
As we went to leave the kitchen we noticed a little white box above the kitchen door that we hadn't noticed before!
Turns out it was the CM alarm! Unfortuately, although we knew what it detected we didn't really know what it meant.
We couldn't open it to replace the battery so we shut it in the hallway cupoard under a pile of towels.............. I realise now how stupid we were in doing that but my point is that she didn't even know there was one in the house (council tenancy) never mind what to do about it. You see these monitors/alarms mentioned more & more these days which is a good thing because hopefully it'll encourage people to have them and also the fact that there's more education about this these days will, I hope, stop people doing the same silly thing that we did!.•¨¨*:•..•

It's definitely a good thing to keep talking about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. I was prompted to buy mine a few years ago, when those poor children were killed on holiday in Corfu (the boiler in their apartment was leaking). This was a high profile case at the time and kept niggling away at me until I bought one. At that time they cost around £25-£30 - still not expensive for something which could save your life, I know, but if you're hard up then it's a purchase which you might keep putting off.....But for £5.99 there's really no excuse not to have one, especially if there are children at home.
It's worth remembering that lots of them are portable, so remember to take it with you when you go away on holiday, for extra peace of mind0 -
Any link pls?0

i have one standing on the side in my kitchen....but where are u supposed to place them? Was it not budgies they used in the mines on the floor to see if carbon monoxide was present as it was a heavy gas? and if so, should the alarm be fitted low down rather then on the ceiling?is officially a GLEEK0

I don't think they're supposed be fitted to the ceiling but couldn't say for sure, so do check!
I remember mine came with very specific instructions with regard to where it should be placed. If you don't have the packaging/instructions any more I'd check any instructions printed on the unit itself or look on a reputable website - make sure you get good advice that you can trust as it's obviously very important to have it working effectively0 -
speaking to a gas fitter last week he said NOT to the ceiling as carbon monoxide monitors should be fitted on the wall or counter as cm is heavier than normal air it sinks rather than rises , his word not mine lol, so kitchen counter or wall lower than the boiler is ok according to him
at least hever is in ospital now,0
