My dad brought one, 2 months later i was home alone when it went off. I have an illness which would mask the symptoms of CO poisioning but because the alarm went off I got out before it caused me any problems. Best £20 my family has ever spentBest wins in 2013 £200 and Mini iPad. 2014 no wins. 2015 2 nights 5* hotel with £300 vouchers plus £1150 Harrods gift card

So many of us have smoke alarms now and wouldn't think of being without them. We need to feel the same about CO alarms; they are not expensive, last for 5 years usually, and could well save your life or that of your children or even your pets. A friend of mine is a gas engineer and went out to a property recently where the boiler was leaking CO but the first sign was a dead pet budgie. They now have a mended boiler AND an alarm.
Edit: I've just read in a New Scientist book that 75% of fatalities in house fires die of fumes, among them carbon monoxide, before they even know that there was a fire. Having both really is Belt and braces, even if you don't have gas appliances.

I've had a carbon monoxide alarm for a few years but never really thought about needing to replace it. Obviously I replace the batteries but I didn't realise that the unit itself will probably only last a few years....
If I test it regularly and it all seems ok, is it ok to keep using it or do people suggest routinely replacing after 5 years, regardless? I know you can't put a price on safety and all that but I don't want to fork out unnecessarily, if you know what I mean!0 -
The guarantee usually lasts for 5 years. I know that British Gas advise replacement after then, but at any time before then if it's faulty they replace them free of charge. We had one from Homebase that went wrong after a few months- replacement given in store.
